On June 2, soldiers from the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) arrested a suspect who allegedly tried to cross from Syria into the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights near Mount Hermon.
In a a brief statement, the IDF said that the suspect was ambushed and detained and has been taken in for further investigation.
Just a day earlier, a unit from the IDF backed by battle tanks and armored vehicles advanced some 400 meters to the west of the town of al-Hurriyah inside the UN-monitored buffer zone in the Syrian governorate of al-Quneitra. The unit demolished some dirt barriers then withdrew back to the occupied Golan Heights.
The two incidents are not likely linked. The man arrested by the IDF was likely a farmer or a shepherd who lost his way. The man may have been even abducted by the IDF before entering the Israeli-occupied part of the Golan Heights.
Last year, Israel released two Syrian shepherds under who were abducted by the IDF from al-Quneitra. The two men were a part of a group of four Syrians who Tel Aviv agreed to release under a Russian-brokered prisoners exchange deal with Syria. From its side, Damascus released an Israeli girl who entered Syria under unknown circumstances.
The IDF has been very active along the frontline with Syria for a few months now. The unusual Israeli escalation on this frontline may be just an attempt to intimidate Damascus, or a part of preparations for something bigger.
