Israeli strikes killed at least 28 people across Lebanon on April 10, including 13 security personnel, according to the Health Ministry and the state-run NNA news agency.
The security personnel were killed in the town of Nabatieh in southern Lebanon, where the strikes hit a government complex and a State Security office. State Security is the country’s national intelligence and internal security agency tasked with countering threats, espionage and terrorism, as well as protecting senior officials.
“This painful loss only strengthens our determination to achieve a ceasefire that will protect Lebanon and our people in the south,” Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said in a statement.
Meanwhile, President Joseph Aoun called on the international community to “assume its responsibilities in putting an end to the repeated Israeli aggressions”.
The strike on Nabatieh was also condemned by Hezbollah, which warned the Lebanese government against engaging in talks with Israel.
More than 300 people, mostly civilians, were killed in a wave of simultaneous Israeli strikes on Lebanon on April 8 despite the announcement hours earlier of a ceasefire between the United States and Iran. Pakistan, which helped broker the agreement, said that Lebanon was included, but both Israel and the U.S. denied this.
Hezbollah, which adhered to the ceasefire at first, began responding later, firing dozens of rockets at Israel.
The deadly strikes in Nabatieh came following reports that the U.S. President Donald Trump asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to scale back Israeli strikes on Lebanon to prevent the collapse of the fragile ceasefire with the Islamic Republic.
Iran’s parliament speaker set a ceasefire in Lebanon and the “release of Iran’s blocked assets” as preconditions for the start of negotiations with the U.S..
“Two of the measures mutually agreed upon between the parties have yet to be implemented: a ceasefire in Lebanon and the release of Iran’s blocked assets prior to the commencement of negotiations,” Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf wrote in a post on X in English. “These two matters must be fulfilled before negotiations begin.”
Trump is also said to have pressured Netanyahu into accepting a proposal to peace hold talks with Lebanon very soon.
A report by Israel’s Channel 12 revealed that Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Yechiel Leiter is slated to hold a first-of-its-kind phone call with his Lebanese counterpart Nada Hamadeh-Moawad in preparation for the pair meeting in-person in Washington for direct talks on a long-term ceasefire, the disarmament of Hezbollah, and normalization between Jerusalem and Beirut.
A senior official from the U.S. State Department will also be taking part in today’s phone call, as well as an in-person meeting on April 14.
Ahead of the meeting, the U.S. and Lebanon are pushing Israel to agree to a ceasefire in Lebanon as a demonstration of its seriousness about reaching an agreement, Channel 12 said.
The planned talks could easily cause unrest in Lebanon. Hezbollah and its allies will never agree to give up their arms, and may be even willing to fight to prevent a peace agreement. In short, a ceasefire with Israel could be followed up by a civil war, if the U.S. pressures the Lebanese government into normalizing with Israel.
In any case, Israel does not seem to be keen on a peace agreement, as evident by the deadly strikes against the government complex in Nabatieh.
