Late on October 14, a series of Israeli strikes targeted Aleppo International Airport, damaging the runway and placing it out of service.
“The Israeli enemy carried out an air attack from the direction of the Mediterranean Sea, west of Latakia, targeting Aleppo International Airport, which led to material damage to the airport and it being out of service,” a Syrian military official said in a statement to the state-run SANA news agency.
The official added that the attack “confirms the criminal approach of the Israeli occupation,” accusing it of “crimes against the Palestinian people.”
A few hours before the attack, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that two rockets were launched from Syria toward the occupied Golan Heights, setting off sirens in the town of Avnei Eitan. Both rockets landed in open areas, causing no damage. The IDF responded with artillery shelling toward the source of the rocket fire.
On October 12, On, Israeli strikes knocked Syria’s two main airports of Damascus and Aleppo out of service following a mortar attack that targeted Golan Heights. This was the first wave of Israeli strikes to hit the country since war erupted in the Gaza Strip after the October 7 surprise attack by the Hamas Movement and other Palestinian factions.
The second attack on Aleppo International Airport came shortly after the runway was repaired and the airport went back into service. Damascus International Airport is still out of service as of October 15.
The IDF has not yet commented on the recent attacks against Syria. The attacks were likely carried out to deter Damascus and prevent it from joining the battle alongside Hamas. Israel has already failed to prevent the war from spilling over to Lebanon, where Hezbollah and Palestinian factions have been launching attacks for a week.
