Late on August 31, a series of Israeli strikes which were reportedly launched from the Eastern Mediterranean targeted Aleppo International Airport in Syria’s northern region.
A military official told the state-run Syrian Arab New Agency that a number of missiles struck the airport, which is located in the eastern outskirts of Aleppo city. According to the unnamed official, the strikes caused material losses only.
Local activists in Aleppo city shared footage on social media showing a series of large explosions at the airport. According to unverified reports in the Arab media, the strikes targeted the main runway of the airport as well as nearby military positions.
The strikes came exactly a week after a large-scale aerial attack that targeted a sensitive military research complex in western Syria. The complex, which located near the town of Masyaf in Hama, was targeted with four cruise missiles and 16 guided bombs launched by two F-16 fighter jets of the Israeli Air Force from the Eastern Mediterranean. Secondary explosions and fires wounded 14 civilians in nearby towns and villages.
Israel ramped up its attacks on Syria earlier this year in a bid to mount more pressure on the Damascus government over its alliance with Iran and Lebanon’s Hezbollah.
The repeated Israeli attacks are supposedly meant to prevent Iran from establishing a lasting military presence in the war-torn country as well as to destroy Iranian weapons shipments en-route to Hezbollah.
Damascus and its allies could respond to the attack on Aleppo International Airport. A recent report by the New York Times said that the alliance, known as the “Axis of Resistance,” have agreed to respond to Israeli attacks by striking US bases in Syria.
