At least 30 people were killed on October 31 when a series of violent Israeli strikes targeted the Lebanese region of Baalbek.
Baalbek is located in the Bekaa Valley, close to the border with Syria. The heavily populated region is known to be a stronghold of Hezbollah.
Prior to the strikes, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) issued evacuation orders for the whole of Baalbek city and the neighboring towns of Ain Bourday and Douris, warning that it would “act forcefully against Hezbollah interests”. Tens of thousands of people fled from the region within a few hours.
The state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported that the Ras al-Ain Hills, Amshki, al-Asira, al-Kayyal Road areas were hit, and the northern and southern entrances to Baalbek. The strikes also targeted Ain Bourday and Douris, including fuel tanks in its vicinity, it said.
Later, the Lebanese health ministry said that 11 people, including three women, were killed in a strike on Salibi Farm in Baalbek. Eight others, including five women, were killed in another strike in Bednayel, it added.
The ministry separately said that an additional 11 people were killed in Israeli strikes in the town of Sohmor, in the southern Bekaa Valley.
Following the strikes, the IDF said in a statement that it had conducted “intelligence-based strikes on fuel depots located inside military compounds belonging to Hezbollah’s Logistical Reinforcement Unit 4400 in the Bekaa Valley”. The unit was responsible for transferring weapons from Iran, it added.
A later statement by the IDF said that Israeli warplanes had “struck command-and-control centers and terrorist infrastructure” in Baalbek.
The clashes on the Lebanese-Israeli border first broke out after the start of the war in the Gaza Strip, with Hezbollah launching attacks in support of the Palestinian enclave. Israel escalated its attacks on Lebanon starting from September 17 and on September 27 it assassinated the Secretary-General of Hezbollah, Hassan Nassrallah.
The IDF officially announced the launch of a limited ground operation against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon on September 30.
The deadly strikes on Baalbek show how the IDF is working to further expand its operations in Lebanon. So far, Israeli strikes on the country have claimed the lives of more than 2,800 people and left more than 12,000 others wounded. Many of the victims were women and children.
