A series of Israeli strikes hit Syria’s central region as well as the coastal town of Baniyas, killing a child and injuring ten civilians, the Syrian Arab News Agency reported on May 29 citing a military source.
“At approximately 19:30 pm, the Israeli enemy launched an air aggression from the direction of Lebanese territory, targeting a site in the central region and a residential building in Baniyas … leading to the death of a girl, the injury of ten civilians,” the unnamed source was quoted as saying.
Photos posted to social media showed a fire close to the town of al-Furqlus in the eastern countryside of Homs as well as damage to a residential building in Baniyas.
Other photos that surfaced online showed successful interceptions of a large unidentified aerial object, possibly a drone, over Syria’s southern region and the remains of a downed Israeli-made Spice 1000 precision-guided glide bomb in the eastern Lebanese governorate of Beqaa.
Lebanon’s Al-Mayadeen TV, which has close links to the Syrian government, reported on May 30 that the Israeli strikes destroyed a truck on a road leading to al-Furqlus, denying that the driver was killed or that Hezbollah were aboard the vehicle.
There was no immediate word on the incidents from Israel, which typically does not comment on specific reports of strikes in Syria.
Israel has significantly escalated its attacks on Syria since the outbreak of the war in the Palestinian enclave of Gaza Strip, targeting Syrian military sites as well as personnel of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Hezbollah and other forces of the so-called Axis of Resistance.
Dozens of Syrian civilians were killed or wounded in recent Israeli strikes, however the war-torn country has been refraining from responding in an effort to avoid a dangerous confrontation.
