More than 100 Palestinians were killed and dozens others wounded on August 10 when the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) launched strikes against a school sheltering displaced people in the Gaza Strip.
Gaza’s civil defense agency said that at least three Israeli munitions hit al-Tabi’in school in Gaza City’s al-Daraj neighborhood, describing the attack as a “horrific massacre”, with some bodies catching fire.
“The occupation army directly bombed the displaced people while they were performing the dawn prayer, and this caused the number of martyrs to rise rapidly,” the Gaza Government Media Office said in a statement following the strikes.
“This clearly comes within the framework of the crime of genocide and ethnic cleansing against our Palestinian people,” it added.
Videos posted to social networks showed dozens of burnt and shredded bodies as well as severely wounded people at al-Tabi’in school.
From its side, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) claimed in a statement that its air force targeted a command and control center where Hamas commanders and operatives were hiding. The military said it had taken steps to reduce the risk of harming civilians, “including the use of precise munitions, aerial surveillance, and intelligence information”. It did not immediately comment on the casualty reports from Gaza.
The Palestinian Islamic Jihad rejected the claims made by the IDF. “The enemy army’s excuses for destroying schools are the same ones it used to destroy hospitals before, and they have been proven false,” it said in a statement.
Just two days earlier, the Health Ministry in Gaza reported that the Palestinian death toll from the Israeli war had reached 39,699 with more than 91,722 other people wounded. Women and children are said to make the bulk of the casualties in the Strip.
Despite the rising human cost, Israel intensified its operations in Gaza in recent weeks in the hopes of defeating Hamas and other Palestinian armed factions there.
