In a major escalation, Israel on September 9 targeted the leadership of the Palestinian Hamas Movement in the Qatari capital, Doha.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement that it targeted Hamas leadership in cooperation with the Shin Bet security agency.
Qatar was not mentioned in the statement. However, it was released just minutes after blasts were reported in the Katara District of Doha.
“The members of the leadership who were struck led the terror organization’s activities for years, and are directly responsible for carrying out the October 7 massacre and waging the war against the State of Israel,” the statement reads.
The military added that it took steps to mitigate civilian harm in the strike, including by using precision munitions and other intelligence.
Israel’s Channel 12 said that the attack on Hamas leadership in Qatar was codenamed “Atzeret HaDin,” which translates roughly to Day of Judgment. The name clearly refers to the Jewish holiday of Shemini Atzeret, during which Hamas carried out the October 7 of 2023.
In addition, an senior Israeli official told the news channel that the attack was greenlighted by United States President Donlad Trump.
Hamas’s top leaders were all reported present when the building they were in was targeted by the IDF. Among them was the Hamas leader in Gaza, Khalil al-Hayya.
Also believed to have been present at the building during the attack were senior Hamas figures: Zaher Jabarin, who leads Hamas in the West Bank, Muhammad Darwish, head of Hamas’s Shura Council, and Khaled Mashaal, head of Hamas abroad.

Qatar “strongly condemns” the Israeli attack on Hamas leadership in its capital, calling it “cowardly.” Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari said that the attack “targeted residential buildings housing several members of the Political Bureau of Hamas,” adding that the “criminal assault constitutes a blatant violation of all international laws and norms, and poses a serious threat to the security and safety of Qataris and residents in Qatar.”
He also stressed that Qatar “will not tolerate this reckless Israeli behavior and the ongoing disruption of regional security, nor any act that targets its security and sovereignty.”
Qatari Al-Jazeera later reported that members of Hamas leadership survived the Israeli attack, without providing any details. Qatar is located more than 1,800 kilometers away from Israel, and that’s in a straight line. It is very likely that the strikes on Doha were carried out by the Israeli Air Force, with fighter jets infiltrating the airspaces of Syria then Iran before launching the attack from above the Persian Gulf.
The U.S. maintains a major air base in Qatar, Al-Udeid, but it is highly unlikely that they played any direct role in the Israeli attack.
It is unclear why Qatar was not able to stop the attack as it was militarily well-armed, with modern fighter jets and air defense systems. During the 12-day war between Israel and Iran last June, Iran attacked Al-Udeid after the U.S. launched strikes on three of its nuclear sites. 13 out of 14 ballistic missiles launched from the Islamic Republic were intercepted by Qatari and U.S. air defenses at the time.
The Israel attack on Qatar appears to be a part of the IDF’s ongoing plan to escalate operations against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The main goal of the next phase of the war will be to completely occupy Gaza City, which lies between the northern and central parts of the Palestinian enclave.
Two days earlier, Trump issued a “last warning” to Hamas, calling on the group to accept his suggestion for ending the war which has so far claimed the lives of more than 64,000 Palestinians.
“Everyone wants the hostages HOME. Everyone wants this war to end!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“It is time for Hamas to accept [my terms] as well,” the U.S. President continued.
“I have warned Hamas about the consequences of not accepting. This is my last warning. There will not be another one,” he added.
Hamas has since shown openness to the suggestion, which reportedly includes the release of all remaining Israeli hostages in exchange for a permanent end to the war that would also see control over Gaza being handed over to another Palestinian body. Still, all of this was not apparently enough for Israel.
Aside from Gaza, the Israeli attack on Qatar will spark tensions with Gulf states, and even with Turkey which is a close ally of Doha.
