The Israeli escalated its operations in the Hezbollah heartland of southern Lebanon on September 3, sending its troops on a raid and launching a wave of deadly strikes.
In a statement, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that its troops entered the Mount Dov area, also known as Shebaa Farms, in southern Lebanon overnight and destroyed several positions previously used by Hezbollah.
The raid came following months of observation and reconnaissance in the area, according to the military, which noted that the operation was carried out by the 810th Mountain Regional Brigade, under the 210th “Bashan” Regional Division.
Lebanese media confirmed that Israeli troops advanced in the Khanouk area on the outskirts of the town of Aitaroun, and proceeded to rig and blow up a livestock farm.
The IDF also announced in a separate statement that it had carried out a strike earlier in the day on a site in southern Lebanon used by Hezbollah to produce materials supporting the group reconstruction and operations.
The military that the presence of the production site constitutes a violation of the understandings between Israel and Lebanon.
Two operatives of Hezbollah were also killed in separate strikes on the southern towns of Yater and Shebaa, according to another statement by the IDF.
Lebanon’s Ministry of Health announced the death of four people in the south of the country in separate attacks by the IDF.
One person was killed in the strike on Yater, another in the attack on Shebaa, a third in an attack on the town of Taybeh, and a fourth in an attack on the town of Kharayeb. Another person sustained injuries in the town of Houla after being targeted by a stun grenade dropped by an Israeli drone while moving household furniture, according to the ministry.
In addition, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said on September 3 that Israeli drones dropped four grenades a day earlier close to its observers who were working to clear roadblocks hindering access to one of their positions.
“This is one of the most serious attacks on UNIFIL personnel and assets since the cessation of hostilities agreement of last November,” UNIFIL says in a statement.
One grenade allegedly impacted within 20 meters and three within approximately 100 meters of UN personnel and vehicles.
Responding to the UNIFIL statement, the IDF said that its forces were acting in retaliation to a “suspicious presence” in the area. The military emphasizes that no deliberate fire was directed at UNIFIL personnel and reaffirmed that the safety of Israeli civilians and forces remains a top priority.
The IDF continued to conduct operations in southern Lebanon and elsewhere in the country even after Hezbollah accepted a ceasefire proposed by the United States last November. The military also refused to completely withdraw from the region. To this day, Israeli troops remain deployed in five strategic posts there.
Despite Israel’s aggressive behaviour, the U.S. has been pressuring the Lebanese government to fully disarm Hezbollah. The government accepted a proposal on the issue last month and is now working out a plan. However, the group has pledged to keep its arms at all costs.
The recent escalation by the IDF is clearly meant to mount more pressure on Hezbollah, which suffered heavy losses during its last confrontation with Israel. The next step for Israel is likely to resume full-on war on Lebanon. This could happen the moment a ceasefire is reached in Gaza.
