On August 13th, almost all major Israeli news outlets, almost simultaneously, began publishing articles with statistics on Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Air Force operations over the last 5 years.
Although the Air Force carries out quite a few airstrikes in the Gaza Strip, apparently all the statistics provided are focused in the north and are mostly covert. They are ones for which Israel didn’t take responsibility, such as hitting alleged Iranian targets in Syria, and attempts to hinder the alleged transfer of weapons from Iran to Hezbollah in Lebanon.
The statistics include:
- Over the past 5 years (2015-2020), the Air Force has used about 5,000 units of aviation weapons “in all theaters”, incl. over the past 3 years (i.e., from mid-2017, but mainly from the beginning of 2018, when truly active operations began), 955 targets were attacked, on which 4,239 bombs and missiles were used, including dozens of strikes by F-35I fighter jets;
- Since 2017, Syria has fired 873 anti-aircraft missiles, incl. 844 over the last 3 years, i.e. since mid-2017, mainly missiles of the SA-17 (Buk-M2E) and SA-22 (Pantsir-S1) complexes; for comparison – in 2013 – only 2 missiles were fired;
- Over the past 2 years (and mainly in open operations, i.e. such as when Israel took responsibility, usually in response to terrorist attacks or shelling of Israeli territory), the Air Force destroyed a third of the Syrian air defense systems;
- The number of operations has skyrocketed over the past year, despite the coronavirus epidemic;
- 70% of the pilots who participated in these operations are reservists.

In parallel, the Air Force also notes the enemy’s response.
So, there is an exchange of information about the actions of the Israeli Air Force and the conclusions drawn from them.
Syria buys new radars and new air defense systems, incl. Russian S-300 missile defense systems.
The Air Force confirms that Syria manages to shoot down some of the bombs and missiles launched by Israel, but only one plane was lost – the F-16I in 2018.
In addition, two videos have been published. One shows a flight at extremely low altitude, the other a refueling in the air of a F-15I fighter jet at night.

Iran begins large-scale modernization of T-72 tanks
Iran has begun the large-scale modernization of the over 1,000 Russian T-72S tanks. Work is underway in the Tank and Heavy Mechanical Plant in the area of the city of Doroud (Lorestan Governorate) tomodernize these tanks, as the Iranian Armed Forces continue to strengthen their forces.
The Minister of Defense, Major General Amir Hatami, recently visited the military facility and was briefed on the ongoing work progress.
As shown in the photos published by the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), the tanks were equipped with new towers with a higher level of protection.New turret, FCS, protection, remote controlled machinegun, looks like laser warning sensors etc.
Dynamic protection is also installed. On the front of the hull, special horizontal armor plates are placed, which, when hitting the tank with ammunition, do not allow the adjacent elements of the “reactive armor” to operate in the idle position.
Deep upgrade of Iranian T-72 tanks up to as T-90 Karrar standard on Bani Hashim Industrial Complex in Dorud. New turret, FCS, protection, remote controlled machinegun, and
laser warning sensors etc.
The tank is equipped with a new target designation system, in which, in addition to daytime optical technology, there is a night thermal imaging channel. Left from the T-72S tank is a 1K13 “Neman”, which is used to guide Tondar anti-tank missiles, a clone of the Russian 9M119M missile.
The turret is equipped with a remotely controlled 12.7 mm machine gun and the tanks are equipped with a diesel engine with a power of up to 1000hp and NBC protection. Iran is also producing the T-90 Karrar striker at a rate of 50 per month.

If the numbers are correct, this means BUK-M1/M2E, Pantsir-S1E and KUB are having a hard time locking onto big nose missiles. Also Idf electronic jamming can severely disrupt the passive phased array radar designs for these systems. Also a major lack of modern early warning radars prevent SAA from getting a heads up. instead they use 1950’s EW radars which can be easily jammed. Turkey even used their KORAL to jam Syrian pantsir radar which was prone due to passive phased radar design. Much cheaper and easier to make pesa, but not reliable and easy to jam and confuse.
Solution: -Syria needs plenty short range SAM with active phased array radars AESA -Syria needs plenty early warning EW radars like JY-27 with AESA design -With new SHORT range aesa SAM and lots of advanced early warning radar, the interception rate against idf attacks would increase dramatically
