Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed on March 23 that Israel had successfully assassinated two nuclear scientists in Iran.
“We are crushing the missile program and the nuclear program, and continuing to strike Hezbollah hard,” the primer said in a video statement. “Only days ago, we eliminated two more nuclear scientists, and our arm is still outstretched.”
Israel is reported to have assassinated at least 11 scientists during the 12-day June war on Iran last year, but it is still unclear how many have been killed since the start of the ongoing war.
Khoda Bakhsh and Mohammad Reza, two senior scientists in a secret project developed by Iran, were targeted on the night between March 20 and 21, and according to Israeli assessments reported by Hebrew media, were both killed.
In addition, just a few hours before Netanyahu’s statement was released, Iranian media reported that Saeed Shamghadri, an associate professor in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at Iran University of Science and Technology, was killed along with his two children in an Israeli strike.
Israel has assassinated dozens of Iranian officials, starting with Supreme Leader Ali Khaminai, since the start of the ongoing war.
The assassination campaign is meant to cripple the Iranian command and control chain, as well as to set back research within the Islamic Republic in the nuclear field, and even to hinder the development of military capabilities, like missiles and drones.
The campaign has clearly failed to affect the command and control chain in Iran, and its effect on research and development is yet to be seen.
According to the Iranian health ministry, the American-Israeli war has already claimed the lives of more than 1,500 people and wounded over 19,000 others.
