On March 22, Jaysh al-Izza claimed that its fighters had shoot down a Russian-made Orlan-10 unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) over the opposition-held part of the northern Hama countryside.

Jaysh al-Izza released a video showing fighters shooting down the UAV with a Soviet ZU-23-2 23 mm anti-aircraft twin-barreled auto cannon.

The Orlan-10 has a flight duration of up to 16 hours and an operational range of 140km. The UAV can be equipped with different types of sensors to carry out several missions, including reconnaissance, 3D-mapping, electronic warfare and communication relay.

During the Syrian war, the Russian Aerospace Forces used the Olan-10 UAV extensively on all fronts. In November of 2015, it was the Orlan-10 that located the wreckage of the downed Russian Su-24M2 bomber and helped for the quick recovery of the surviving member of the crew from the militants-held territory.

Taking into account recent developments, the Russian Aerospace Forces will likely respond to this attack by striking Jaysh al-Izza’s positions in northern and northwestern Hama.
