On January 30, Jaysh al-Izza, one of the armed factions occupying the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib, released five service members of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and handed over the remains of an Iranian Bridger General, who was killed during a battle in the northern countryside of Hama back in 2016, under a deal with Syrian authorities.
In exchange for the five captives and the Iranian officer’s remains, Syrian authorities released three militants of Jaysh al-Izza who were captured less than two years ago while conducting an operation behind the SAA’s lines.

The swap took place near the Tronba crossing, which is located to the east of the government-held town of Saraqib in the southeastern Idlib countryside.
Jaysh al-Izza was one of the largest factions in Greater Idlib before losing most of its assets and militants in a series of battles with the SAA between 2018 and 2020. Currently, the group is working closely with al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the de-facto ruler of Greater Idlib.
In the last three years, Syrian authorities swapped prisoners with armed factions in the northern countryside and Greater Idlib on a number occasions. Most of the deals were brokered by Russia and Turkey in the framework of the Astana Peace Talks.
One of the most recent swap deals saw the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army in the northern Aleppo countryside releasing five service members of the SAA in exchange for five captives who were freed by Syrian authorities.
