Jordan has officially designated al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which is based in the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib, as a terrorist group.
The Kingdom’s Anti-Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Unit announced the step on July 24. HTS was one of 12 entities which were added to the Jordanian terrorism list by the unit. Four of the other entities were Horas al-Din, Ansar al-Tawhid, Jama’at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad and the Turkistan Islamic Party, which are also based in Greater Idlib. 22 personnel, many of whom based in Syria, were also added.
The unit said that the move was taken in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council. Instructions were given to all banks, money transfer, small investment funds and insurance companies in Jordan to avoid dealing with the designated entities.
HTS, originally known as al-Nusra Front is the de-facto ruler of Greater Idlib. The mainstream media have been making efforts to whitewash the terrorist group and its leader, Abu Mohamad al-Julani, for a few years now. Many Western journalists and researchers have already made calls to remove the group from terror lists in the US and the European Union.
The terrorist group recently began working to expand its influence outside of Greater Idlib. Activities by the group were reported in the northern countryside of Aleppo as well as in Daraa, which is located right on the border line with Jordan.
It’s worth noting that a number of HTS senior leaders were Jordanian citizens. Many of whom were killed in the battlefield or assassinated after defecting from the terrorist group.
Jordan, who maintains strong relations with the official government in Syria, is not apparently interested in the idea of whitewashing HTS. However, the US, the Kingdom’s closest ally, views HTS as an “asset”. This will not likely change any time soon.
