On June 5, two pilots of the Royal Jordanian Air Force (RJAF) were killed when their Grob G 120TP training aircraft crashed in northern Jordan.
In a statement, the Jordanian Armed Forces said that the two-seater aircraft crashed at 9:00 am local time in the outskirts of the northern town of Ramtha, which is located near the border with Syria.
The two deceased pilots were identified as Major Bilal Mashhour Ahmed Al-Shoufein and Captain Baha Muhammad Mustafa Abu Ghanmi.
The incident was attributed to an unspecified “technical malfunction.” The aircraft was built by Germany’s GROB Aircraft. It is used for training and aerobatics. The RJAF received at least 16 G 120TP between 2017 and 2018, two of which were donated by the German government.
With only 231 aircraft, the RJAF is relatively small compared to other air forces in the Middle East. The air force operates only 44 fighter jets, all of which are US-made F-16s.
The RJAF stepped up its operations along the border with Syria in the last few years to help the armed forces and border guards counter drug and weapons traffickers. The air force operations along the border line remain limited to reconnaissance.
