Crews of The Russian Navy’s Black Sea Fleet have started training to fly Kamov Ka-31R airborne early warning and control helicopters.

“As part of the training of crews to control the Ka-31R, the pilot-instructor conducts training flights together with the trainees at the first stage – at the helm, and then on the Navigator’s seat, giving the trainee the opportunity to acquire independent piloting skills.

During the flights, helicopter pilots practice taxiing, takeoff, helicopter control, use of radar, and landing of the Ka-31R.

The next stage of flight crew training will be performing training flights with takeoffs and landings on the helicopter deck of a ship performing tasks at sea, both anchored and on the move.

Due to the significant differences between the Ka-31R and Ka-27 and Ka-29, the Black Sea Fleet has developed a program for retraining existing crews of naval aviation helicopters for a new type of aircraft, and training activity for  pilots is included in the fleet’s combat training plan.

In addition to the flight crew, the new equipment is also mastered by the technical staff, which conducts pre-flight training of the helicopter before departure,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement on its website.

The Russian Navy has a total of 12 Ka-31R helicopters on order. Two of them have been delivered as of March 2020.

Dick Von Dast'Ard

Poses the question as to which ships in the Russia navy will be deploying them?

Lone Ranger

The Kuznetsov is under refit. It will be back in action. They also have 3 Kirov class battlecruisers they can land on. And a few of the new smaller guided missile cruisers are also compatible with it.

Jens Holm

I hope they åut in more toilets.

Jens Holm

It can cover all Black sea from Sevatopol.

And why should they be gathered as some floch meetings on one ship. You can land on almost any ship, if You wish. One with some fuel, some beds and good food and toilet facilities might do.

The anemy then has to fire 12 shots to hit all.

Lone Ranger

A well proven platform. I like them a lot. Congrats.

Can they track the Turk drones?

Jens Holm

Of course the can. I am sure those drones as minimum has some stealth and flairs.
