The AK-12 assault rifle.
A batch of modified AK-12 assault rifles has been delivered to Russians troops in the special military operation zone in Ukraine for evaluation, Sergey Urzhumtsev, chief designer of Russian defense giant Kalashnikov, revealed in an interview with TASS that was published on February 25.
“From the very beginning of the special military operation, we have been actively cooperating with the Defense Ministry and with those units that were first supplied with these samples. Based on this feedback, a list of comments and proposals on the actual operation of this type of weapon is made … We have produced a batch of AK-12s with the changes that were made. This batch has already been sent to the special military operation zone to update feedback,” Urzhumtsev told the Russian news agency on the sideline of the international exhibition IDEX 2023 in the United Arab Emirates.
The AK-12 is chambered in 5.45×39mm, features a barrel length of 415 mm , a maximum firing range of 800 m, and a standard magazine capacity of 30 rounds. It features a Picatinny rail on the top of the receiver for mounting various optical sights and on the top, bottom and sides of the handguard to mount various accessories.
According to Urzhumtsev, the two-shot cut-off mode was excluded from the modified AK-12 batch because it complicated the design without improving efficiency of the rifle. Other changes are related to the convenience and simplification of the operation of the weapon.
Klashinkov produces several variants of the AK-12, like the short-barrelled AK-12K, the AK-15, which is chambered in 7.62×39mm, the short-barrelled AK-15K, the AK-19 that is chambered in in 5.56×45mm NATO and the AK-308 that is chambered in 7.62×51mm NATO (.308 Winchester).
The AK-12 was developed by Klashinkov under the “Ratnik” infantry combat system program. The assault rifle entered service with the Russian military in 2018.

That is good news….unfortunatelly the AK12 had some issues, as the designers made some unnecessary departures from the proven design of the AK74. Modernizing the AK74 M platform would make much more sense instead.
Care to explain? I am not familiar with the AK74M, but only read somewhere that the Chinese had improved on it, and produced a very good rifle. What strikes me about the article is that they now use the same standard calibres as we do in the West, and that the combat range has been improved to 800m, over the 300m of the AK47, which had too much recoil. I’d like to know how robust this rifle is, though. The AK47 is supposed to shoot under all circumstances and rarely jam, whereas Western weapons might be much more sensitive to dust, cold, heat etc.

Lighter and tighter than the AK47 variants, excellent for reccon, ambush, trench assault, and for armed transport; really well made by the looks of it. This could become the new analog standard. Those ‘samples’ will be immensely collectable, specially if they saw combat.
