Russia’s defense giant Kalashnikov has sent its upgraded Kvazimachta tethered reconnaissance drone to troops in the special military operation zone in Ukraine, the group’s Director for Exports of Drones and Loitering Munitions Leonid Rokeakh told TASS on August 11.
The Kvazimachta, also known as the Quasi-Mast, connects to its operators via a very long cable that is not only used to control the drone, but also to supply it with power.
While this limits the drone freedom of movement, it allows it to operate for longer periods of time all while completely resistant to electronic warfare means.
“Up to 500 hours [the drone’s capability to stay in the air]. Yes, it can operate for so long. As a rule, there is no need for such continuous operation. As a rule, it operates for 24 hours. That is, it hovers in the air, then an operator brings it down to check if everything is all right and its diesel generator can be replaced or some other maintenance is carried out,” the executive told the Russian news agency.
According to Rokeakh, the Kvazimachta is typically deployed to protect the perimeter of a certain military site, or used for civilian purposes, for example, for monitoring during mass events.
The Kvazimachta is equipped with a gyro-stabilized, day and night capable electro-optical system for reconnaissance. The drone also has an emergency landing system that automatically activates in the event of a power failure from the ground source.
The deployment of the Kvazimachta in the special military operation zone will help evaluate its capabilities, as well as the validity of the concept of tethered reconnaissance drone as a whole.
Russia has made giant leaps in drone technology since the start of the operation, not only increasing its production of unmanned systems by multiple folds, but also developing unique concepts and technologies.
