On September 21st, the Kavkaz (or Caucasus) 2020 military exercises kicked off in Russia, with the participation of China, Pakistan and other countries.
According to a statement of the Russian Ministry of Defense, Russia’s Armed Forces will pay particular attention to combating cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles.
“The Kavkaz-2020 drills will particularly focus on combating cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as on fire and electronic warfare activities against entire enemy formations, on training airborne troops’ vertical envelopment capability and ways to rapidly shift between military activities,” the message reads.
The decision was made based on the experience gained during various armed conflicts, including the Syrian one.
Another focus will be on using weapons and military equipment at different times of the day and conducting deep-penetration raids.
The Kavkaz-2020 drills, led by Chief of the General Staff Army General Valery Gerasimov. The Kavkaz-2020 exercise will be held from September 21 to 26 on the territory of the Southern Military District, in Black and Caspian seas.
The exercise involves about 80,000 personnel.
The troops include officers of the Russian Emergencies Ministry and the Russian Guard, as well as up to 1,000 troops from Armenia, Belarus, China, Iran, Myanmar and Pakistan.
About 12,900 troops are going to take part in activities covered by the 2011 Vienna Document of the Negotiations on Confidence-and Security-Building Measures.
Fighter jets of Russia’s Southern Military District are on combat duty within the framework of the Kavkaz-2020 drills that started on Monday, the Russian Defense Ministry’s press service informed.
“Crews of Su-27 and Su-30SM fighter jets of the Southern Military District are on combat air defense duty at operative airfields in the Republic of Crimea, the Krasnodar, Stavropol and Rostov Regions within the strategic command post drills Kavkaz-2020,” the ministry informed.
About 60 Ilyushin Il-76 military transport planes have been moved to operational airfields as part of the exercise.
“The flights were carried out from the planes’ home airfields in the Tver, Pskov, Orenburg, Ulyanovsk and Rostov regions. About 60 Il-76 military transport aircraft have been moved,” a Ministry of Defense statement said.
Pakistan in particular presents the participation in the war games as quite significant, and a big policy goal of its own.
“For Pakistan, this has long been a foreign policy goal. Over the years we have seen successive governments make overtures to regional players and try to improve contact where possible. Kavkaz 2020 is the perfect opportunity for this. Military engagement as part of an exercise is a very positive means to engage in security relations with the states present and a good way to show our prowess in all matters related to defence. Any potential to form links with CAR countries is an avenue that should be explored,” Pakistani media reported.
Chinese troops arrived in Russia approximately a week ago to prepare for the exercises.

Three Y-20 transport planes landed at a military airport in the Astrakhan Region, Russia on Sunday. This is the first time that the Y-20 transport aircraft formation have performed transnational airlift for heavy equipment along a brand-new route, covering a one-way flight distance of nearly 5,000 kilometers with the flight duration exceeding seven hours.
The Chinese participating troops consist of a exercise directing team, a joint operations commanding team, a combined battle group, a commanding support team, a logistics and equipment support team, and a medical support team.
Meanwhile, reports of Russian aggression and Chinese assistance on that matter are yet to begin following the start of the exercises.
Prior to that, of course, there were numerous calls that this was an aggressive presentation of force, since most of the activities take part in the Southern Military District in Russia, as well as the Caspian and Black Seas, so it is a “threat” towards Ukraine, among others.

Our generals monitor how UAVs are used in Syria and they are low efficient against regular army in most cases except recognition. Bombs and guided missiles are much more effective for a war. If we are speaking about kinda “police operations” like Turks against Kurds or USA against Afghans – UAVs are very efficient. But try to recall the last Syrian offensive in Idlib. Turkish UAVs were effective until SAA troops in the front got manpads and battalion level 2A/AD equipment like Tor. So efficiency of UAVs in a real war is still disputable. BTW Russia has Okhotnik. An UAV with AI nobody except Russia possesses. USA is still developing such kind of equipment.

Turkey uses UAVs in Idlib only as long as Russia tolerates it. Without radio communication back to Turkey they are effectively shot down, and Russia are very good at finding radio transmitters and hammering them.
