In a significant tactical advance, Russian military units from the “Center” Group of Forces have liberated the settlement of Pervoye Maya (1st May), also known as Leontovichi. On August 27th, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation confirmed the full control of the settlement, marking another step in the gradual encirclement of the strategic Ukrainian fortress of Pokrovsk.
The victory holds both symbolic and strategic weight. The village, renamed from Pervoye Maya in a Ukrainian decommunization effort, previously served as the headquarters for the Ukrainian military grouping under General Drapatyy during his failed counter-offensive operations in the area earlier this year. After initial limited successes, that counterattack stalled, leading to a command reshuffle and the deployment of Ukrainian nationalist special forces units to hold the line. After sustaining heavy casualties over a month and a half of fighting, these units were ultimately forced to retreat from their defensive positions on the southern and southwestern outskirts of Pokrovsk.
The capture of Pervoye Maya provides Russian forces with a crucial launching point to target Pokrovsk’s remaining western supply routes. One key road, the T-0406, has already been severed by Russian advances in the areas of Kotlyno and Udachnoye. The victory now allows Russian troops to exert pressure on the vital E50 highway, the main artery leading to Pavlograd and Dnepropetrovsk, which is critical for sustaining the Ukrainian garrison in Pokrovsk.
Furthermore, Russian forces have secured a dominant elevated position by taking control of a large slag heap on the southern outskirts of Pokrovsk itself. This height advantage offers superior observation and firing capabilities over Ukrainian defenses in the city’s southern districts, where Russian troops are already advancing on the streets.

On the southwestern outskirts the stronghold of Udachnoye remains in the gray zone, with the most intense clashes concentrated in its northern part as Russian units push to establish full control and end the prolonged battles with their victory.
