Amid the retreat of Russian forces in the Kharkiv region, the Armed Forces of Ukraine continue to expand their control zone in the Kharkiv region.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine are aiming at reaching the borders of the Russian Federation.

On May 9, the AFU made another attempt to counterattack a grouping of Russian forces on the island of Zmeiny. Attack was a failed “PR campaign” by the Kiev regime to seize the island on the eve of the Great Patriotic War Victory Day.
The attack ended with the complete defeat of the airborne forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
On May 10, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed that the Kiev regime lost 30 military UAVs in this area over the past three days, including 9 Bayraktar-TB2s. 27 bodies of Ukrainian special forces and nationalist fighters remain at Zmeiniy Island as a result of Kiev’s failed operation. According to the Russian Ministry of Defence, the operation resulted in the deaths of more than five dozen Ukrainian fighters and members of elite AFU units, the loss of 4 aircraft, 10 helicopters, 3 boats and 30 unmanned aerial vehicles.

Once the Ukrainians cut off the supplies to Izyum, or even threaten it in a serious manner, the Izyum offensive will fail, and it will develop into a stalemate.
The whole Russian strategy revolves around Izyum. If they cannot supply it anymore, then it is game over. What other options do they have?

Russian equipment is significantly cheaper for similar specsheets so even where they do have to trade it’s not an economic loss for the Russians especially against all these shiny modern missiles NATO is dumping into Ukraine, NATO is similarly paying an economic price in many fields that Russia can be self sufficient in if they aren’t already.

There is one thing you don’t take into concideration. Strength of forces that are actually deployed. Russian grouping north of Hkarkiv is weak and only consists of 3-5 battlegroups, and from them a large portion are LNR volunteers. Izyum grouping alone is 35 battlegroups of Ru army. Besides, there are around 20 russian battlegroups ready in Belgorod oblast (inside Russia). That’s why noone gives much attention to this frontline. I would guess they want to bait Ukrainians close to the border and annihilate them with quick counteroffensive.

If there is no strategic value in those areas around Kharkov, let Ukraine advance. They will have that much farter to retreat. ‘yay, we took knoll on the west side of a river’.
Looking at google maps, the left prong of the Ukrainian advance is useless. It just pushes the Russians back, there are no road hubs or means of encirclement and they are restricted by a respectably large lake.
The right prong is equally worthless until they reach Vovchansk which is a road hub in an area Russia is using. If Ukraine actually took Vovchansk, that would be notable. BTW I know about fire control but I just do not believe Ukraine can setup heavy artillery that close to the front without it being destroyed.

Looking at the map again, I see that Ukraine has 3 (not 2) prongs of attack. 1. From Kharkiv towards Belgorod. This has no strategic value, just pushing the Russians back a few clicks without impacting supply lines. 2. The second towards Vovchansk, if they take or get fire control over Vovchansk, that would disrupt a road hub. and 3. towards Izyum. Izyum is the furthest part of Russia’s attempt to create a cauldron. So far, Ukraine has achieved nothing. If they take either Izyum or Vovchansk, I will sing a different song but they have not done it.

As soon as they retreated, they went to the East and joined the rest of Russian forces and kicked as*. They took Mariupol and East in a matter of days soon after.

RU air force and related air assets (recon drones, Mi 24/28, Ka 52) should be in overdrive on the northern part of the front. Also striking deep past the front at junta troops and supplies and equipment moving towards the front using drones to locate targets of opportunity and paint them with lasers for stand off weapons, and high flying stike fighters supporting these drones and doing their multi role thing (look down patrol, missile truck and occasional wild weasel).
Well I wouldn’t say it is a stalemate yet, but the gains are very slow. I thought with the taking of Popsynaya, that the other areas would start to fall like Dominoes, but that doesn’t seem to be happening.
