The 12th Army Aviation Brigade of the Ukrainian Ground Forces has reportedly lost one of its helicopters over the special military operation zone.
In a statement posted on its official Facebook page on March 12, the brigade, which mainly operates Mi-8 transport helicopters and Mi-24 helicopter gunships, mourned two of its pilots. The statement didn’t clarify when, where or how the helicopter was lost.
Ukrainian and Russian news sources confirmed later that a Mi-8 helicopter of the brigade was shot down by the Russian military, without revealing where it was targeted. Two pilots, identified only by their first names “Andrei” and “Yaroslav”, were killed in the crash.
This was Ukraine’s second confirmed aerial loss within a few days. On March 8, a MiG-29 fighter jet of the Ukrainian Air Force crashed near the city of Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region.
At the time, some news sources said that the Ukrainian MiG-29 was shot down by a Russian fighter jet, allegedly a Su-35, while others reported that the crash was the result of a friendly-fire incident. Pilot Andriy Tkachenko was killed in the incident.
Ukraine’s aerial capabilities took a serious hit after the start of the Russian special military operation more than two years ago.
The Kiev regime later received dozens of military helicopters and fighter jets as well as air-launched precision-guided missiles and bombs from the United States and other NATO states. However, its aerial capabilities remain very much ineffective in the face of the Russian military.
