Early on August 26, Russian air defenses foiled two Ukrainian attacks with suicide drones on the regions of Moscow and Belgorod.
In a statement, the Russian Ministry of Defense said that a suicide drone was shot down in the early morning hours over the Istra district while it was heading towards Moscow.
“On August 26 at about 03:00 a.m. Moscow time, the Kiev regime’s attempted terrorist attack on facilities in Moscow and the Moscow region with the use of an airplane-type UAV was foiled. On-duty Air Defense Forces destroyed the drone over the Istra district in the Moscow Region,” the ministry stated.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said on his Telegram channel that the attack attempt didn’t result in any casualties or material damage.
Later in the morning, the Russian MoD reported that a second Ukrainian suicide drone was intercepted over the territory of Belograd.
“The Kiev regime’s attempt to hit Russian facilities with an aircraft-type unmanned aerial vehicle was thwarted at about 9:00 a.m. Moscow time on August 26. On-duty air defenses destroyed the drone over the Shebekino District of the Belgorod Region,” the statement reads.
The attack attempts came as Kiev forces were struggling to advance in several directions within the special military operation zone.
A spokesman for the Russian Zapad Group of Forces told TASS on August 26 that the group had repelled five Ukrainian attacks and seized three strongholds in the Kupyansk direction.
“Battlegroup West’s assault teams seized three enemy strongholds in the Kupyansk area, eliminating about 40 troops. Five counterattacks were repelled, each of which involved up to a platoon of troops, as well as armored vehicles, from the 43rd, 44th and 115th separate mechanized brigades and the 68th separate ranger brigade,” the spokesman, Yaroslav Yakimkin, said.
According to Yakimkin, the aviation wing of the group also carried out 14 strikes against Kiev forces. In the past day, the group destroyed three American-made M777 towed howitzers, two mortars and a pickup truck, using artillery systems and flamethrowers.
On the same day, the Russian Tsentr Group of Forces announced that it had repelled seven attacks by the 42th, 63th and 67th mechanized brigades of Kiev forces in the direction of Krasnolimansky.
Kiev forces lost 60 troops, an infantry fighting vehicle, an armored vehicle and two pickup vehicles during the fighting in this direction, according to the group, which also announced that a Strela-10 air defense system was destroyed with a Lancet loitering munition and an A1-CM Furia drone was shot down.
In addition, the group said that its artillery suppressed 20 firing positions of Kiev forces and destroyed a Msta-B towed howitzer and a 120 mm mortar.
Meanwhile, the Russian Yug Group of Forces said that it had targeted several Ukrainian units in the directions of Lisichansk, Soledaro-Artemovsk and Aleksandro-Kalinovsk. Attack helicopters of the group also destroyed an enemy infantry fighting vehicle and a group of infantry near Bogdanovka, Andreevka and Kleshcheevka.
Near Kleshcheevka, the group targeted a gathering of Ukrainian troops with TOS-1A heavy multiple rocket launchers. The group also destroyed a howitzer with a Lancet loitering munition close to Seversk.
Moreover, the group’s artillery destroyed two pickup trucks, an armored car and two ammunition depots near Belogorovka, Krasnogorovka and Pobeda as well as a stronghold in Orekhovo-Vasilyevka.
Two D-20 towed howitzers and four 120 mm mortars were also destroyed near Serebryanka, Dyleevka and Georgievka, according to the group.
These were not all the recent losses of Kiev forces. On August 25, it was reported that Ukraine lost three warplanes: a Su-25 close air support jet was shot down in the Kherson direction and two MiG-29 fighter jets which allegedly collided midair over the Zhytomyr region. Russian news sources shared footage showing the movement the Su-25 was shot down.
News sources also shared videos showing recent strikes with Lancet loitering munitions that destroyed several pieces of military equipment, including a Swedish-made CV90 armored combat vehicle and an American-made M777 towed howitzer.
The mounting losses of Kiev forces highlight the difficulties facing Ukraine’s counteroffensive which began more than two months ago. Despite failing to make any achievement on the ground, the Kiev regime appears to be determined to go on with the counteroffensive.
