The Russian military’s Sever Group of Forces repelled two Ukrainian counter-attacks and inflicted heavy losses on several formations of Kiev forces in the Kursk direction, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced on October 18.
In its daily briefing, the ministry said that Ukraine’s 22nd, 47th, and 115th mechanized brigades, 82nd, 95th air assault brigades, the 36th Marine Brigade, as well as the 103rd and 129th territorial defense brigades took losses close to the settlements of Lyubymovka, Sverdlikovo, Malaya Loknya, Novy Put, and Plyokhovo.
The ministry added that two counter-attacks by Kiev forces were repelled near the settlements of Zelyony Shlyakh and Lyubimovka.
“As a result, the AFU [Armed Forces of Ukraine] losses were up to 20 troops killed and wounded, two armored fighting vehicles,” it stated stated.
In addition, the ministry announced that Russian air and artillery strikes hit gatherings of the 17th Tank Brigade, 41st, 47th, 61st mechanized brigades, 80th and 95th air assault brigades, the 1st National Guard Brigade, as well as the 103rd and 129th territorial defense brigades near the settlements of Bogdanovka, Bondarevka, Guyevo, Daryino, Kubatkin, Kolmakov, Lyubimovka, Novy Put, Plyokhovo, Nizhny Klin, Nikolayevo-Daryino, Novoivanovka, Sverdlikovo, Sudzha, and Tolsty Lug.
Other strikes targeted, according to the ministry, the reserves of 21st and 115th mechanized brigades, the 95th Air Assault Brigade, as well as the 101st and 129th territorial defense brigades close to the settlements of Basovka, Belovody, Belokopytovo, Vodolagi, Pavlovka, Revyakino, and Studenok in the Ukrainian region of Sumy, which borders Kursk.
“During the day, the AFU losses were more than 505 troops, 15 units of armor, including two tanks, two infantry fighting vehicles, one armored personnel carrier, ten armored fighting vehicles as well as seven guns, including one United States-made M198 howitzer, and eight motor vehicles,” the ministry said.
Separately, Russian media released several videos showing some of the strikes that hit Kiev forces in Kursk and Sumy in recent days.
Kiev forces launched a surprise attack from Sumy into Kursk last August. The Russian military is currently conducting a counter-attack. So far, over a dozen settlements have been liberated.
According to the Russian MoD, since the start of the battle in Kursk Kiev forces have lost 24,367 troops, 167 tanks, 79 infantry fighting vehicles, 101 armored personnel carriers, 952 armored fighting vehicles, 651 motor vehicles, 200 artillery guns, 38 launchers, including nine American-made HIMARS and six MLRS systems, nine air defense systems, five transport-loading vehicles, 48 electronic warfare stations, nine counter-battery radars, three aerial radars, 22 engineering vehicles, including 13 counter obstacle vehicles, one UR-77 mine clearing vehicle and three armored recovery vehicle.
