October ended with figures that put the tempo of the fighting in perspective. Russian forces gained ground, Ukrainian casualties remained high, and the front line itself grew longer. At the same time, the fight for Kupyansk moved into a new phase.
According to Russian Defense Ministry reports, Ukrainian personnel losses in October totaled 39,625 killed and wounded. Since the start of 2026, the reported total stands at 390,985. For comparison, the same source put losses for last September at 46,025 and for the equivalent period of 2024 at 60,545. Personnel losses also cover only the line of contact, and exclude troops killed deeper inside Ukraine by long-range precision weapons and aircraft.
Territorial changes tell a similar story. According to automated counts of open-source maps, Russian forces took control of 273 square kilometers in October. The line of contact now stretches 2,190 kilometers, which is 11 kilometers longer than in September. A longer line means more ground for Ukraine to defend with the same pool of reserves.
Evacuations in the north point to where pressure is building.
In Kharkiv Oblast, Ukrainian authorities are urgently evacuating officials and civilians from the settlement of Slatyne as the front approaches. The administration of Kozacha Lopan, which had earlier been relocated to Slatyne, has now been relocated as well.
Further east, Kupyansk has produced the most significant change in weeks. By the end of October 30, Russian forces had achieved tactical gains that could bring the battle for the city closer to its end. The village of Radkivka, north of the city, was fully cleared, and at least half of the neighboring large village of Myrove came under Russian control. Ukrainian troops had earlier used those two villages as the base for a counterattack that won them some success.
The capture of both settlements has now given Russian forces a stable supply route into Kupyansk itself. That allowed rapid progress inside the city. The entire western part was taken by assault groups the same day.
The composition of the defenders is telling. Reports say a consolidated rifle brigade of the Ukrainian Air Force and the 101st Separate General Staff Guard Brigade are fighting in the city. Neither of these units are a front line combat formation Their presence suggests that Kyiv is committing its last reserves, and the risk of a Russian breakthrough on this sector is rising accordingly.
Ukraine’s losses are heavy, its front is lengthening, and its rear-guard units are now fighting street battles. A month of slow gains has quietly left Kyiv’s planners with a 250,000-square-kilometer problem: too much front and too few men. Kupyansk may be the first place where that gap becomes impossible to hide.
