The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which is backed by the United States, denied on December 5 that its fighters were advancing in the eastern countryside of Aleppo.

“Some hostile media outlets reported movements and advances of our forces towards areas east of Aleppo. We confirm that this news is incorrect and that there is no change in the military distribution map regarding our forces,” the group’s media center said in a statement.

“On the contrary, our forces have repelled several attacks carried out by the Turkish occupation mercenaries on areas controlled by the Manbij and Tabqa military councils during the past two days. The [militants] were defeated and many of them were killed, some of whom were killed, and their bodies fell into the hands of our fighters,” it added.

The statement came after Syrian opposition media reported an offensive by the SDF from the town of Deir Hafer in the direction of Kuweires Military Aviation Institute, recently captured by the Turkey–backed Syrian National Army (SNA) from the Syrian Arab Army (SAA).

It’s worth noting that the SDF expanded its control in the eastern Aleppo countryside, reaching Deir Hafter in coordination with the SAA after the fall of the city of Aleppo last week. Syrian troops are reportedly still present at Jirah Air Base to the east of Deir Hafer.

While the SDF is not currently conducting an offensive against the SNA in the eastern Aleppo countryside, clashes in the region have been heating up.

On December 4, at least 20 militants of the SNA were reportedly killed in an ambush by the SDF to the west of Deir Hafter.

The SDF was badly affected by the large-scale offensive launched by al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham and other factions last week, losing most of its territories in the northern Aleppo countryside as well as its stronghold within Aleppo city, the district of Sheikh Maqsoud.

While the U.S.-backed group helped the SAA pull out of Aleppo city, it also attempted to take advantage of the situation and advance in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor.
