Kurdish forces have taken back the village of Shaykh Khurus and the nearby hill from Turkish forces, the media wing of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) said on February 6.
According to the statement, the YPG and its allies destroyed a Turkish vehicle and captured another one [ACV-15] as well as captured two “terrorists” – most likely members of the Turkish-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA).

The Turkish Armed Forces (TAF) and the FSA entered the village of Shaykh Khurus and Shaykh Khurus Hill earlier this week, but were not able to secure them. Fierce fighting erupted there and the YPG claimed that it had retaken this area. However, the village and the hill de-facto remained contested as the both sides are now competing for them.
Pretty poor stuff by the Turkish soldiers; they look like they got their vehicle into an idiotic tight place and then deserted it leaving it intact to be acquired by the Kurds – Their hearts not in the fight and they show clear signs of lack of quality training / stupidity or both!
That’s the thing with mercenaries like the TFSA. They’re in it for the cash, and when you’re dead you can’t spend it. Whereas these Kurds are true believers in their cause. Belief trumps greed in battle, unless you got overwhelming firepower to back greed up. Which in theory the Turks should have, if it weren’t for Erdogan having destroyed his own army with his purges.
Fair comment! Thanks – agree!
Weren’t the purges mainly on the higher staff-level as well as in the air force, which could explain a lack of tactical experience and efficiency. President Erdogan had also exchanged all the military personnel at the joint NATO Command Centers, but I do not know if this staff fell victim to purges. However, the general training of ground forces can not be affected. The weak motivation of the FSA is certainly an important point, but only one of many. As mentioned earlier, an army always looks better on paper than in the field.
Maybe it first it was higher ups, but they kept on purging thousands upon thousands from the military. At some point you’re out of generals and then the colonels and majors and captains start entering the picture. Also, without that middle cadre there couldn’t have been a coup. You need junior officers to carry out the orders of the senior ones. I’m sure that Erdogan seized upon the coup to gut the armed forces from the ground up and rebuild them in his image. Remove the spirit of Ataturk from them for once and for all.
22 920 military personal had been sacked 6511 officers 16 409 cadets
and just look at the career of their chief commander and look where he severved bevor: In 2016, General İsmail Metin Temel, Commander of the Van Gendarmerie Public Security Corps, was appointed to the 2nd Army Commandership with the appointment decision of the Ministry of National Defense. İsmail Metin Temel speaks English. In 2016 he was promoted to the rank of general.
LOL!
I’d say Gendarmerie Commander is the best commander out there that could handle this operation. He probably did hundreds of small to mid scale operations against PKK in Van’s mountains.
Afrin is the same.
Difference is that Afrin’s PKK has sophisticated weapons and their number is really high.
Disagree. He acts like a Gendarmerie Commander in Van. This is exactly the problem. You can use tanks and armourd vehicles like that, against small groups with light weapons. But against these experienced and fierce fighters with a lot of AMGs, these tactic will turn against you. They got another tank just hours ago. last in the row. Bang! They will get a lot more.
You are completely right. Seems turks had indeed the PKK in Turkey in mind who are fighting a small scale guerilla army in eastern Turkey and who lack almost any heavier weapons, numbers and secure bases within their operations areas.
YPG/SDF have all of those and are now gaining experience in fighting a formal army with tanks, heavy artillery and planes. I would expect SDF/YPG forces to become more experienced in this fight and therefore more successful.

*Light weapons
On top of that, there is the small matter of morale, or lack of it.
I reckon morale was never that high in the Turkish army to begin with, as conscription in middle eastern countries is never popular, with every possible means to evade it being exhausted. Not to mention a culture of great distance between officers and ordinary soldiers. Now add constant purges, an officer class in disarray, new politically correct officers who know jack shit replacing old ones and you have a recipe for disaster. It takes a long and brutal war for such a service to sort itself out again and weed out the dead wood and incompetents.
Still, with enough brute force and determination of the political elite you can still win. Just look at the Red Army in the Finnish Winter War. They got their asses kicked horrendously, but they still beat the Fins. Not as much as they had originally hoped but the Fins had to sue for peace still.

SF Please block this person from the site? Thanks
Block him by yourself, SF has no influence on DisQus.
SF has every influence on Disqus. They can allegedly choose the banned words, add filters etc. That is what I was once told so please don’t shoot the messenger if I am wrong.
Go to right side of the objectionable spam/ comment – click on the inverted triangle and get two drop down options. First is ‘Block User’ option – click to block user from appearing in your personal Disqus account feed so don’t see their posts, or click second ‘Flag as Inappropriate’ option and from the ‘Flag Comment’ pop up box click ‘Spam’ option to report them to moderators (can block user from this pop up as well). The reason they change their avatar name constantly is that they get flagged as spam a lot.
Thanks Bob! Someone appears to have done this for me – maybe SF?
I flagged it. But the user will change the avatar name or open new account and be back soon enough. Block User or keep on Flagging as Spam – whenever see this bogus ‘Google’ spam-scam post.
Thanks again Bob! You’re right they keep coming back.
It is apparent that the ‘ make lots of $ per hour ‘ scams always appear after a post that is undeniable proof of stupidity by the US Deep state.
That particular spam is being quite aggressively posted on SF comments forum. Block or just keep Flagging to Discus moderators.
” Are you suggesting is another form of hasbara harassment to the site? ”
I think they are Bob.
Interesting call – I was just visually bypassing it as minor irritant. But there is a pattern and consistency.
Damn, sorry, just repeated your comment.
All good – spread the word!
You block yourself, right hand side next to your comment, see the down arrow; press it and choose.
Fuck off
Can the Afrin Kurds collect more of these to form their own mech inf unit ? Also a couple of captured Leopards would be great fire support :D
Don’t support PKK.
The best thing you can support in the fucking mess there. But if you prefer some old greedy power-politicians toches, feel free to put your head in. ;-)
I don’t care about PKK, but I really, really hate Turks, so I support PKK.
they are not easy to operate…as static artillery its kind of easy to use…..but only against infantry…..against other vehicles its a coffin on wheels
