The conflict between the government and Kurdish rebels (mainly the Kurdistan Workers’ Party [PKK]) continued to escalate in 2016.
The situation has been rapidly deteorated since the collapse of a ceasefire in July 2015. In 2016, the security situation in Turkey was especially tense and the country was hit by a series of major terror attacks by the PKK, the TAK. In total 182 major acts of violence took place in the country.
