On June 26, the Directorate General of Counter Terrorism in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region released photos showing the wreckage of several drones which were used in a recent attack on targets located near region’s capital, Erbil.

At total of four suicide drones were used in the attack. Three drones hit a house in the village of Bragh, while the fourth crashed on the mountain of Tearin. No casualties were reported.

In the photos, the drones appear to be well-built, with an outer body made out of a composite material, likely reinforced with Carbon fibers. The drones were propelled by what appears to be a small single cylinder engine.

Some experts speculated that the drones were made in Iran. There is evidence of this. Yellow tags with serial numbers can be seen on the drones. Similar marks were found on the Iranian-made 358 surface-to-air missile seized by the US Navy off Yemen’s shores last year.

Furthermore, the drones beard Shiite religious slogans usually used by Iranian-backed forces in Iraq, like “In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, God is the Greatest, O Zahraa, the Broker of the Mighty.”

The drone swarm attack was condemned by the US. Washington’s consulate in Erbil is located 3 kilometers away from the targeted house in Bragh.

This was not the first drone attack on the Kurdistan Region. On April 14, a suicide drone hit Erbil International Airport. The target of the attack was reportedly a hanger containing equipment for the US Central Intelligence Agency. Pro-Iranian forces were blamed for the attack.
