Following revelations by the Russian Foreign Ministry that Ukraine had outright refused to take back the bodies of its dead soldiers, despite attempts to downplay the scandal, Kyiv has now accepted the remains of 1,212 fallen troops. The handover took place on the afternoon of June 11, with Ukraine attempting to mitigate the political fallout by returning 27 bodies of deceased Russian servicemen in exchange.
Earlier this month, Russia had prepared to transfer over 6,000 identified Ukrainian soldiers’ remains, but Ukrainian representatives failed to appear at the designated location, leaving the process in limbo for days. The sudden reversal suggests mounting pressure on Kyiv, as its refusal to retrieve the dead had sparked outrage among soldiers’ families and further undermined public trust in the government.
The breakthrough follows the second round of Russia-Ukraine negotiations in Istanbul on June 2, where both sides agreed to several mainly humanitarian measures. Among them were the immediate exchange of severely wounded prisoners on an “all for all” basis, the repatriation of POWs under 25 years old, and a broader commitment to trade at least 1,000 captives in total. Additionally, Russia unilaterally pledged to return 6,000 more Ukrainian bodies, having already completed identification procedures for all of them.
Vladimir Medinsky, aide to the Russian president, emphasized Moscow’s willingness to continue the repatriation process but warned that further delays or political games from Kyiv would not be tolerated.
“Russia wants peace, but if Ukraine continues to prioritize Western interests over its own people, Moscow will have no choice but to respond accordingly,” he stated.
Medinsky added that work on the transfer of the bodies of the dead between the Russian Federation and Ukraine will continue. The sides will begin urgent sanitary exchanges of wounded prisoners on June 12.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that contacts with Ukraine on the transfer of remains are ongoing, though he cautioned against expecting rapid progress in broader diplomatic efforts with the West. Meanwhile, Moscow remains prepared to facilitate further humanitarian exchanges, even as it dismisses Western economic pressure, including oil price caps, as ineffective.
Yet with thousands more Ukrainian dead still awaiting repatriation, the episode underscores the Zelensky regime’s precarious balancing act, caught between battlefield losses, collapsing morale, and the grim optics of abandoning its own fallen.

why aren’t they collecting their own dead, to begin with? cant be just the issue of payouts.
i remember all the videos of ukes dropping grenades on white flag waving russians collecting the dead.
im sure theres no correlation here.
the russians have an outsize collection of bodies for a couple of reasons.1 they want to kill as many nazis as possible at close range, which is why they leave the dniepr bridges intact and 2. they are advancing after killing the nazis and therefore collect all the bodies along with new territories.
the ukes bombing white flag wavers are just nazis being themselves particularly when being controlled by tribesmen.
