I have read that Russia has not installed the AIP systems yet. But Lada class is quieter than a Kilo, and the small crew size of 35 is impressive. :)

Only first Lada didn’t have AIP, for some technical reasons they decided to build sub without AIP and use it for testing… After certain delay Lada is back in production and was designed and built to have AIP… I think. Also Russian AIP is not based on Lithium-ion batteries or any batteries at all. They have invented special system from converting diesel into electricity or similar (I do not remember any longer it was long time ago I was reading that. The huge advantage it is not easy to ignition-flammable material like those batteries (security risque).

There were troubles with AIP. Now another one – MoD doubts in AIP effectiveness. Lithium accumulators (such as new japanese subs have) looks more promising. They are expensive, but can give ability to be 2 weeks under water. Recharge takes hours, i.e. short time. AIP need on-board storage of oxygen, it’s flammable, takes inside volume and also expensive. May be future small submarines will be equipped with accumulators only.
Have you seen anything to Russian alternative to AIP Lithium accumulators? At the time when I was reading (long time ago) they were talking about invention of using diesel fuel (or something else?) to convert it into energy instead of using Lithium accumulators Also isn’t endurance for AIP 45 days like it is stated in Lada’s specs? Is this just regular Lada with one big delay over the AIP or they have made some improvements compering to the 1st one?
Diesel is needed for full speed under the snorkel or surface moving. Diesel subs swimming at surface most of time. Batteries accumulating energy from diesels for quiet (and slow) submerged swimming when diesels turned off. First “Lada” doesn’t have AIP. Date to develop – 2023th. Then we will see. Anaerobic power plants have misty future on my opinion. First AIP was invented in 1940’s ans wasn’t used widely. Japan after experience with AIP preferred to come back to traditional scheme (diesel+accum.) but with advanced fast-charge batteries with long endurance.

I believe these r equipped w advanced hypersonic that can launch missiles when submerged—more accurate, more deadly and able to strike targets further away than inferior US cruise missiles
