The Project 11711 large amphibious assault ship Ivan Gren will enter service with the Russian Navy by the end of June, 2018, according to the state-run media.
The Ivan Gren is a leading ship of the class, built at the Yantar Shipyard on the Baltic coast. The warship was laid down by the Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad in west Russia in December 2004 and launched in May 2012. The ship’s sea trials started in June 2016.
The Ivan Gren officially finished state trials on June 2.
The amphibious assault ship can carry 13 battle tanks, 36 armored personnel carriers or infantry fighting vehicles or up to 300 marines. The Ivan Gren is also capable of transporting a reinforced marine infantry company with organic military hardware and land it with the use of pontoons.
The Ivan Gren’s deck hangars allow the usage of two Ka-29 transport attack helicopters.
The Yantar Shipyard is currently building another Ivan Gren-class warhip, the Pyotr Morgunov. This warship is expected to be delivered to the Russian Navy in late 2018.

This is the start for Russian shipbuilding capabilities to ramp up, overcoming the effects of sanctions and replacing them with home made counterparts, and building ships with higher tonnage displacement. This ship is useful in power projection in eastern and central Mediterranean Sea.
Well done Russia. This warship is based on latest technology. Send it for help to Gaza Palestine. This warship can play a significant role in breaking the siege on Palestinian nation and to rescue Palestine from Israeli European migrants.
Makes you wonder if they gained more technological expertise for making these type of boats from the French Mistral experience. There were reports that Russia was able to exit the deal with a lot of “privileged information”, after the French abrogated agreement of sale.
From what I have read, most of the internal equipment was Russian, the French just built the hull and superstructure, that’s why France had to get Russian approval to sell the ships to Egypt. To make the ships truly useful, Russia sold Egypt more gear including choppers.
Russia could always have built the ships, but went French in an effort to integrate with Europe and balance trade between the 2 nations, which is very much in Russia’s favour.

YUP, that & Putin wanted to scare Russia’s Defense contractors into being more transparent and reasonable on their pricing. By showing them, Russia could always buy foreign. It worked. Delivery times & costs have both been reduced since.
