In the morning of April 24, a large explosive rocked the center of the militant-held city of Jisr al-Shughur in the northwestern part of Idlib.
The pro-opposition news outlet, Baladi News, reported that the explosion was caused by a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED). A spokesman of the White Helmets told the outlet that 15 people were killed and 30 others were injured in the explosion.
“Until this moment, we are still searching and rescuing people stuck under the rubble,” the spokesman said.
Jisr al-Shughur was captured by a coalition of al-Qaeda-affiliated groups and the Free Syrian Army (FSA) in June of 2015. Back then, the al-Nusra Front [now known as Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)] killed or expelled most of the locals as a punishment for their support to the government. Later, militants of the Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP) and their families settled in the city.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack in Jisr al-Shughur yet. However, pro-opposition activists said that the bombing was likely carried out by ISIS cells, which were targeted by a HTS’ security forces over the last few days.
