A large convoy of the US-led coalition had departed Syria’s northeastern region towards Iraq through the al-Walid border crossing, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported on September 10.

Local sources based in the town of Ya’rubiyah on the border with Iraq told the state-run agency that the coalition’s convoy consisted of 100 vehicles, mainly trucks. Some of the trucks were carrying armored vehicles, which were apparently damaged.

The SANA shared photos showing what appears to be trucks carrying American MRAP [mine-resistant ambush protected] vehicles of an unidentified type near the Iraqi border.

The military equipment was likely sent back to the Iraqi Kurdistan Region as a part of the US-led coalition’s regular rotation of forces.

The US-led coalition is not withdrawing from northeastern Syria. On the contrary, it has been expanding its presence in the region. Earlier this month, the coalition established a new base in the region, specifically to the southwest of the al-Qamishli town in the northern countryside of al-Hasakah.

Damascus and its allies, first and foremost Iran, have been growing frustrated with the US occupation of northeastern Syria, where rich gas and oil fields are located.

Last month, the northeastern region experienced a limited military confrontation between Iranian-backed forces and the coalition. Several bases of the coalition and its proxy, the Syrian Democratic Forces, were hit. However, this was not enough to convince Washington to pull its troops out from Syria.
