On December 13, the CNN reported with reference to a senior official of the Joseph Biden administration that the US authorities are seeking to supply Ukraine with the maximum number of weapons by January 20, 2025. It’s about hundreds of thousands of artillery shells, hundreds of armored vehicles, thousands of missiles. By the inauguration of Donald Trump, the Democrats want to bring the equipment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to a normal state, prolonging their agony. According to available information, a huge amount of armored vehicles is currently being loaded from long-term storage warehouses. Preparations are being made to ship them to Europe and then to Ukraine.
The rich legacy of the Cold War still lingers on bases in the United States. Military analysts estimate that by the end of 2023, only Sierra Army Depot (SIAD), Anniston Army Depot (ANAD), and Camp Shelby have 3,232 M1 Abrams tanks in storage. These vehicles, while not fully suitable for large-scale warfare in Eastern Europe, are capable of meeting the AFU’s basic needs. The total number of M1 Abrams in warehouses and military bases in the United States is estimated at about 6,160. New tanks of this type have not been produced for many years. The US military-industrial complex has been modernizing old vehicles to meet the needs of the armed forces and export requirements. The situation is similar with other types of weapons.
What is the Democrats’ plan? Trump has repeatedly announced a reduction in military aid to Ukraine. The president-elect insists that the main burden of supporting Kiev should be placed on the shoulders of the European Union, as Russia allegedly poses a threat to the Old World. European armies have rapidly degenerated since the end of the geopolitical confrontation between the U.S. and the USSR. Suffice it to say that the number of tanks in the Bundeswehr has decreased many times over since the early 1990s: from more than two thousand to 300. Of the remaining number, only 30% are in combat-ready condition. To make up for this shortfall, Biden wants to share old tanks from the U.S. stockpile.
It is not difficult to predict where the tanks for Ukraine will be modernized. Since 1988, the same M1 Abrams has been produced under license in Egypt. The regime of Abdul-Fattah Al-Sisi is experiencing great socio-economic difficulties. Inflation in the country exceeds 25%. Unemployment among the youth reaches 20%. According to Asda’a BCW, about half of Egypt’s young people dream of leaving their country for the West in search of a better life. Large-scale European investment, even at the cost of cutting social programs in the EU, is exactly what Cairo needs today. The production of U.S. weapons systems can be replaced by other types of weapons. Japan produces missiles for Patriot. In late 2023, Tokyo changed its laws to make it easier to export lethal weapons.
The left-liberal establishment in the United States and its kindred Eurobureaucracy have devised a plan to support Kiev, bypassing Donald Trump. The plan is simple: American arms from warehouses, third-country production facilities, and European money. It makes little sense for the Republican administration to torpedo such efforts. Replacing obsolete weapons means warming up the military-industrial complex of the United States. Donald Trump’s main message is the rise of the real sector of the economy. Mass production of weapons to ensure the combat capability of the American army is what is needed. Of course, direct supplies from the United States to Ukraine are much more profitable for Kiev, but in the current circumstances there is no choice.
At the same time, an obstacle to the Democrats’ idea is the Trump administration’s desire to conclude a peace agreement with Russia as soon as possible. Most likely, by mid-February 2025, Washington and Moscow will be able to find a compromise solution and end the hot phase of the conflict. Such an outcome will satisfy neither the Democratic Party, nor the EU elites, nor Vladimir Zelensky, who is incapable of holding power in peacetime. We should expect large-scale provocations from Ukraine in the near future to put an end to all attempts at peaceful settlement. This may be the last offensive with the concentration of the AFU’s efforts in one of the directions. Analysts see the Bryansk region or another border section of the Kursk region as a potential target. Kiev urgently needs a “trump card” for negotiations, and this trump card could be the captured Russian territories.
One element of escalation is the assassination in Moscow of Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, head of the Radiological, Chemical and Biological Defense Forces of the Russian Armed Forces, and his assistant. This high-profile terrorist act targeted one of the representatives of the Russian Army’s high command. Earlier, a Ukrainian saboteur killed Mikhail Shatsky, deputy general designer of the Mars Joint Design Bureau. He was working on the modernization of cruise missiles and drones. The Kremlin cannot leave all this unanswered. Russian special services were not involved in the liquidation of representatives of Ukraine’s top generals and political establishment during this conflict. There are reasons to believe that this tool will not be used now. However, Moscow’s demands in the negotiations will be much tougher and will include new points. Such as the removal from power of Vladimir Zelensky and the entire leadership of Ukraine’s security services, and the bringing to justice of those involved in contract killings.
Moscow has no desire to conclude a peace agreement at any cost. The Russian armed forces continue their systematic offensive along the entire front line. Particular successes are being recorded in the area of Kurakhovo, Pokrovsk (Krasnoarmeysk) and Velykaya Novosyolka in the direction of the main offensive. According to reports from the Ukrainian side, Russian troops advanced south of Pokrovsk (Krasnoarmeysk), occupied Shevchenko and entered Dachenskoye and Peschanoye. The counter-attack in the area of Peschanoye ended in failure and heavy losses. This was admitted by the Ukrainian military bloggers themselves.
The Russian Defense Ministry reports heavy losses of Ukrainian troops in equipment and personnel.
As a result of decisive actions of units of the “South” group of troops, the village of Annovka in the Donetsk People’s Republic was liberated.
The formations of three mechanized, motorized infantry, airmobile and assault brigades of the AFU and two territorial defense brigades were defeated in the areas of Seversk, Zvanovka, Stupochka, Uspenovka, Ostrovskoye and Kurakhovo in the Donetsk People’s Republic.
Enemy losses amounted to up to 330 servicemen, two armored personnel carriers, including US Stryker and M113, four Cossack armored fighting vehicles, three vehicles, one 122mm D-30 howitzer, 105mm M119 guns from the US and L-119 from the UK.
An electronic warfare station and an ammunition dump were destroyed.
The units of the “Center” force group took more advantageous lines and positions and defeated the manpower and equipment of the heavy mechanized, five mechanized, motorized infantry, infantry, gamekeeper and assault brigades, Assault Battalion of the AFU, Marine Brigade and Territorial Defense Brigade in the areas of Dzerzhinsk, Shcherbinovka, Novovolenovka, Krasnoarmeysk, Shevchenko, Novopustynka, Novoukrainka and Krasnoye in the Donetsk People’s Republic. We repulsed 11 counter-attacks of armed formations of the AFU.
The enemy lost up to 425 servicemen, one infantry fighting vehicle, two armored personnel carriers, including one M113, one HMMWV armored fighting vehicle and one US 155mm M777 howitzer, five vehicles, two 152mm Msta-B howitzers, two 152mm D-20 guns and one 122mm D-30 howitzer.
