Some progress has been achieved in resolving the crisis in Syria, states the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) at the opening of political consultations.
According to him, the international situation remains complicated. “The unprecedented increase in the number of terrorist attacks in such a short time is a serious concern. This has become the major threat to global stability” said Lavrov. “The deadly terrorist attacks carried out around the world, including the murder of Russian Ambassador Andrei Karlov in Turkey, prove that this is a disturbing and dangerous trend.”
According to Lavrov “the many local conflicts and the ongoing uncertainty in the global economy” have worsened the situation. “However, there are some encouraging signs. In particular, I believe that the recent terrorist attacks have strengthened the feeling that there is no alternative to creating a truly universal anti-terrorist front, as the Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the last session of the UN General Assembly in New York” said the Russian Foreign Minister.
“The progress made in settling the Syrian crisis is encouraging. At least everyone agrees that there is no alternative to political and diplomatic solution except national dialogue” said the Russian diplomat.
Lavrov underlined that he meeting in Astana between representatives of the Syrian government and the armed opposition, which is scheduled for January 23, will make an important contribution in creating certain parameters for resolving the conflict. Such talks will continue in Geneva on February the 8th.
