On August 14, video footage showing the mock-up of a dirty bomb that was allegedly sent from Ukraine to smugglers in Syria was leaked.
A dirty bomb is not the same as an atomic bomb. It is a mix of explosives, such as dynamite, with radioactive powder or pellets. When the explosives are set off, the blast carries radioactive material into the surrounding area.
The mock-up dirty bomb seen in the leaked video carried the emblem of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It is still unknown when or where the video was taken.
The most likely possibility is that the mock-up was sent by the Ukrainian intelligence to militants in Syria for training or educational purposes as a part of a plot to orchestrate an attack with a dirty bomb against Russian forces in the country. The video may have been leaked by the smugglers who were hired to deliver the mock-up.
Russia warned of Ukrainian plans to develop and use dirty bombs on several occasions in the past. Last June, the Federal Security Service foiled an attempt to smuggle a kilogram of radioactive Cesium-137, which is enough to make several dirty bombs, to Ukraine.
Furthermore, United States intelligence documents leaked earlier this year revealed a Ukrainian plot to stage attacks against Russian forces in Syria in cooperation with Kurdish forces in the country’s northeastern region. The documents also said that Kiev explored the possibility of cooperating with militants in the northwestern region of Greater Idlib.
The defense ministries of Syria and Russia are yet to comment on the leaked video. More details on the video could surface in the near future.
