Warplanes of the Libyan Air Force (LAF) carried out a new series of airstrikes on the strategic town of Garyan, south of the Libyan capital, Tripoli, in the late hours of July 13.
“Intense airstrikes by our air force on Garyan and its surroundings … Reports of a large number of casualties,” the Libyan National Army (LNA) media office said in a press release.
According to the al-Arabiya TV, several fighters loyal to the Government of National Accord (GNA) were killed or injured in airstrikes, which targeted ammo depots.
Last June, GNA forces captured Garyan in a surprise attack. After imposing control of the town, the forces executed at least 40 injured soldiers of the LNA, who were trapped in a local hospital.
The LNA is currently massing its forces near the strategic town and preparing to launch a large operation to recapture it. The intense airstrikes indicate that the operation may begin very soon.
