The Libyan National Army (LNA) announced late on April 18 that it had repelled a large attack on the town of Tarhunah, southeast of the country’s capital, Tripoli.
Forces loyal to the Turkish-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) launched the attack in the morning of the same day. Turkish-backed Syrian militants took part in the ground assault on Tarhunah under the cover of Turkish combat drones.
Initially, GNA forces advanced around Tarhunah, capturing several nearby positions. However, the LNA pushed back in the afternoon, securing the town’s vicinity.
“The Armed Forces managed to repel the attempts [to approach Tarhunah], pushing back and defeating the enemy,” the LNA’s media center said in a short press release.
The LNA also released several photos showing destroyed military vehicles of GNA forces in the area of the entrance of Tarhunah.

A day earlier, a source in the LNA told Sputnik that 25 Turkish-backed fighters were captured around Tarhunah. Libyan activists shared a video showing fighters that surrender to the LNA.

Despite repelling the attack, the LNA sustained heavy losses. According to the GNA, 102 LNA soldiers were captured. Some heavy weapons were also seized.
The GNA could soon launch a new attack on Tarhunah, or even storm the al-Watyah Air Base, southwest of Tripoli. The base is already besieged by Turkish-backed forces.
Sinking of all Turkey warships is the priority.
