On May 27, the Libyan National Army (LNA) showcased the remains of a Turkish-made KARGU suicide drone that targeted its troops near the country’s capital, Tripoli.

According to the army, the drone took off from the Mitiga International Airport, east of Tripoli, where Turkish forces are known to be present. The drone targeted army troops near the town of Ain Zara.

Developed by Turkey’s defense contractor STM, KARGU can carry out reconnaissance and attack missions. The drone has a rage of 15 km and an endurance of up to 30 minute with an explosive charge.

KARGU drones can operate in a swarm and have an artificial intelligence (AI) image processing capabilities, including facial recognition.

Turkey’s KARGU drones were not spotted in Libya before. Nevertheless, this was not the first time Turkish forces used suicide drones against the LNA.

Earlier this year, LNA forces uncovered the wreckage of an IAI Harop loitering munition near the village of Hamada in eastern Libya. Turkish forces likely attempted to target one of the army’s air-defense systems with the munition.
