On December 17, Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan Nation Army (LNA), announced in a televised speech the end of the Libyan Political Agreement (LPA) that was reached with the Government of National Accord (GNA) on December 17, 2015, in Morocco.

“Libyans suffered all over those two years under the LPA and their political bodies such as the GNA and the Presidential Council. We are witnessing, unfortunately, the collapse of Libya under the rule of those illegitimate entities. But no more, the LPA has expired with the sunrise of December 17, 2017,” Haftar said during his speech, according to the Libyan Express news outlet.

The LNA leader also criticized all the previous political agreements in Libya that were sponsored by the United Nation (UN) and said that some Libyan politics were stubborn and followed their own interest in a clear hint to the GNA leadership.

“All the dialogues starting from Ghadames and ending in Tunis and going through Geneva and Skhirat [in Morocco] were just ink on paper,” said Haftar according to Reuters.

In the end of his speech, Hafatr said that from now the LNA will only follow the will of the Libyan people and warned any international side from pressuring or threating the LNA. He said that the LNA will “fight to the last soldier” in this case.

“We declare clearly and unequivocally our full compliance with the orders of the free Libyan people, which is its own guardian and the master of its land,” Haftar said.

Hafter’s announcement is likely coordinated with its two main backers, the UAE and Egypt that are supporting the secular LNA to counter the influence of the GNA that’s linked to several radical Islamist groups in Libya.

The announcement also came only few months after the UAE began expanding an airbase in eastern Libya to deploy fighter jets in it according to reports. This suggests that LNA might be planning to launch a new attack likely against the radical Shura Council of Mujahedeen in Derna city east of the LNA-held Benghazi city.
