UPDATE: The LNA announced that the city of Sirte is now under its full control. However, the LNA is not going to develop the advance on the pro-GNA city of Misrata right now. Most likely, the LNA leadership is planning to negotiate a kind of a deal with the Misrata militia leadership.

***

On January 6, units of the Libyan National Army (LNA) took control of  the Gardabiya Airbase near the city of Sirte and entered Sirte itself.

According to reports from the ground, a part of Sirte(Misrata) militia loyal to the Government of National Accord (GNA) defected to the LNA. The rest of them retreated from a large part of the town or surrendered weapons.

On January 5, Turkish President Recep Erdogan announced that Turkish troops had started deploying in Libya. However, the Turkish military personnel would not particiapte in direct fighting, according to the President. Furthermore, the deployment just started. So, there was not enough time to change the situation strategically.

I realize that this use to be part of the Ottoman Empire,,, but does that even matter? I do know North Africans who mention they have some Turkish ancestry. They mention a grandmother or something like that. I know some Greek speaking Muslims ended up there at one point, Don’t think there are any left. I think coming from Crete or Cyprus, if I recall. But is there anyone born there who would still have some connection, such as natively speaking Turkish?

In the Paleolithic, it is likely that much of western Europe Cro-magnon population was speaking something along the lines of Basque. Clearly there are some border issues to be resolved vis a vis Spain, France, the BENELUX countries, Germany, Italy etc. to resolve.

LNA has desert fox.

d'Artagnan

These are led by Egyptian special forces whose aim is to make the Turkish invasion of Libya untenable. Turkey simply does not have the logistical apparatus to sustain a long desert war in an unfamiliar country where it even does not understand the tribal culture or speak Arabic. The Senussi tribes have given many invaders a run for the money since Roman era and then expelling Italians in modern history.

Libyan expert

You got it wrong d’Artagnan! The Senussi’s never expelled the Italians. They fought them yes, but were totally defeated after their leader Omar Al Mokhtar was captured and murdered by hanging in the city of Soloug. Italy only left Libya after its defeat in the 2nd world war. It was expelled by the British and Americans, not the Libyans. Gaddafi in 1970 expelled 40,000 Italian settlers who were accepted as legitimate residents by King Idris. That was the only expulsion that took place in Libya. Even the Libyan Jews left by their own accord after being attacked by Libyans in 1948 and 1967. Never forcibly expelled!

Mistra has the deep water port where Turkish or US ships will resupply. It must be within firing range.
