The Libyan National Army (LNA) has launched a counteroffensive to recapture the town of Gharyan from forces of the Government of National Accord (GNA).
Earlier this week, the Gharyan Protection Force, a pro-GNA militia, seized control of Gharyan south of the Libyan capital of Tripoli after a series of intense clashes with LNA units. This development has a significant impact to the battle for Tripoli.
Gharyan is located about 100km south of Tripoli. It has been a key logistical hub used by the LNA to deliver supplies to its troops on the frontline near Tripoli, including the Tripoli International Airport area. The loss of Gharyan puts an end to any LNA offensive actions in the Tripoli Airport area forcing it to take a defensive posture.
Therefore, the LNA is currently attempting to take back its logistical hub and restore the short supply route to its troops on the frontline. According to pro-LNA sources, the LNA’s air force launched a series of air strikes targeting pro-GNA troops based in one of Gharyan’s camps.
The situation is developing.
