The Libyan National Army (LNA) is developing its attack on the city of Derna, which is currently controlled by militnats of the Derna Shoura Council of Mujahideen (DSCM). Derna is fully surrounded by LNA forces.
LNA units, supported by warplanes and artillery, have captured some villages and a wheat silo on the outskirts of the city. The advance is ongoing from 3 main directions: southern, eastern and western.
According to pro-LNA sources, 7 DSCM militants were killed and 7 others were wounded on May 15. Furthermore, the LNA has reportedly captured, Abdelmalik al Mansour, a top DSCM field commander, and 21 DSCM militants.
The LNA has also destroyed at least one vehicle and one battle tank belonging to the DSCM.

The DSCM is a coalition of various radical elements in many cases linked to al-Qaeda or ISIS. The DSCM is besieged in Derna and has no space for any complex counter-attacks or counter-operations to stop the LNA advance. So, the only hope of the DSCM is that LNA infantry will not be able to break the DSCM’s defense in the urban area.
Should the LNA capture Derna, it will free a notable number of troops and equipment, which have been involved in keeping DSCM militants surrounded. So, the LNA will be able to expand operations on other frontlines in the war-torn country.

That’s not exactly how urban warfare works. It is not prefferable to attack or defend a city since the intricate terrain limits heavy weapons usage and offers a myriad minor firing positions but still there is no barrier yhat can’t be breached by brute force. Casualties will be high on both sides and collateral damage will be even higher.
Looks like that captured “field commander” has been eating a lot of donuts, sugary drinks, and packing on extra calories.
