Warplanes believed to be of the Libyan Air Force (LAF) carried out a series of airstrikes on forces loyal to the Government of National Accord (GNA) in the strategic town of Garyan south of the country’s capital, Tripoli, in the early hours of June 29.

The al-Jazeera TV said that the airstrikes targeted the al-Thamina military camp among other positions inside the town. According to the Qatari channel, the airstrikes likely targeted loads of advanced weapons which were captured by GNA forces earlier this week.

GNA forces showcased some of the captured weapons on June 27, revealing that they contained at least four US-made FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs).

The LNA made a rushed attempt to recapture Garyan on June 27. However, it is now preparing a more serious counter-attack, according to several sources. The new airstrikes were likely a part of the army’s preparations.

Earlier, the LNA announced a series of measures against any Turkish presence inside Libya’s territory, airspace or in its waters. The army’s measures indicate that Ankara was heavily involved in the GNA’s successful attack on Garyan.
