Libyan Warplanes Strike Key Tripoli Airport, Sources Claim Turkish Combat Drone Targeted

Warplanes of the Libyan Air Force (LAF) carried out on July 18 several airstrikes on Mitiga International Airport east of the country’s capital, Tripoli.

“The military section of Mitiga airport was targeted, a sensitive target was hit, which confirms the strength of our intelligence on the ground, deep behind the militias lines,” the Libyan National Army (LNA) media center said in a short press release.

Sources in the LNA told the al-Ain TV that the airstrikes targeted a Turkish unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) as it was attempting to land in Mitiga Airport. Last month, a Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 UCAV was spotted flying near the airport.

The LAF’s airstrikes placed the civilian section of Mitiga airport out of service for more than three hours. Many civilian flights had to land in the nearby airport of Misrata.

In the last two months, the LAF targeted Mitiga airport several times. The Government of National Accord (GNA), which runs the airport, appears to be unable to put an end to these aerial attacks.
