A number of Turkish military officers have arrived in the Libyan capital of Tripoli in order to train forces loyal to the Government of National Accord (GNA), the Libyan National Army (LNA) claimed in a new statement.
“A number of Turkish military officers have arrived [in Tripoli] to form operations room and to train the militias’ gathering and the terrorist groups allied with it, which came to the country through Turkey,” the statement, that was released on May 28, reads.
The LNA’s media office also released a video showing an alleged Turkish officer training pro-GNA militants on a modern armored vehicle. According to the media office, the video was extracted from the mobile phone of a GNA fighter, who had been recently captured.
Earlier this month, Turkey supplied GNA forces with more than 20 BMC Vuran and BMC Kirpi mine-resistant ambush protected (MRAP) vehicles. The modern vehicles were shipped from the Turkish port of Samsun to Tripoli aboard a Moldavia-flagged ship named “AMAZON.”
If confirmed, the deployment of Turkish officers in Turkey could be considered another sign that Ankara is determined to support its allies in Tripoli, even if by violating the U.N. imposed weapons blockade on the country.
