Map Comparison: Ceasefire Deal In Libya As Result Of Failure Of Turkish Push On Sirte

On October 23, two rival factions of Libya signed a permanent ceasefire agreement in Geneva following five days of UN-hosted talks. They were held between the representatives of the Government of national accord (GNA) and the Libyan national army (LNA). The development was publicly criticized by the Turkish leadership, including President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, that likely saw this ceasefire as his own failure. The Turkish-pushed Neo-Ottoman proapganda was for months promoting the idea of the great Turkish military victory in Libya (Turkey deployed thousands of troops/military specialists, thousands of pieces of military equipment as well as over 8,000 members of its Syrian proxies) that appeared to be the unrealised dream. Turkish forces stopped the LNA advance on the GNA capital of Tripoli, but failed to achieve any strategic victory and even the port city of Sirte, which was declared as a goal of the Turkish operation remained in the hands of the LNA (supported by Egypt and the UAE).

ro.niccolosi

when are you boomers going to die already

Assad must stay

ahahhahahaha what else is new ahahah

Servet Köseoğlu

Sirte was bonus or Erdogan’s personal ambitiously set-goal which hasn’t a single chance to be materialised. Very badly chosen words, sentences ”even port of Sirte”..and ”Turkey deployed thousands of troops/military specialists, thousands of pieces of military equipment ”..any proof or satellite image of thousands of equipment ..of course not..Another Bravo Sierra from South-front..

occupybacon

Haha Bravo Sierra. I like to learn new expressions. Honest question: what’s in Libya for Turkey? The oil is in the LNA part of the country from whay I know.

Servet Köseoğlu

Construction projects, machines and a foot-hold to niger…True %80-90 oil is in Lna parts..

Ishyrion Av

You’ve got BS from turk. It was Otoman Empire during Suleiman the Magnificent. Northern half of actual Libya was included. Also including large parts of Syria and all Israel. This is why erDOGan mentioned Jerusalem I think one or two weeks ago. Not in a friendly way. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/869658a717605c6c93b3666f0b825b7d77f13016d82ca12e36d6edfd5aed5192.jpg

occupybacon

Back then empires had to control large portions of land in ordee to control some cities, trade routes and resources, nowadays, they can control only what’s important.

Martin

Right. That’s why Turkey tried to conquer Sirte as the gate to the region with the most oil infrastructure.

occupybacon

Even after Sirte there is a long road to Bengazi. Maybe Sirte could just bring LNA to negotiation table… And strike an oil deal

Jens Holm

They actually has a permanent minority there and help them. They are in several sectors and doing pretty well.

occupybacon

Probably, but why not siding with the oil rich counterpart, instead…

Jihadi Colin

There is nothing now since they didn’t succeed in taking Sirte.

occupybacon

Probably they tried to negociate an oil deal with LNA to stop supporting the GNA or they were hoping to beat LNA but met hard opposition from France and USA? Who knows

Rhodium 10

Turkish lost a large number of Drones…also lost an entire Hawk AD + Bonus Koral EWS…Russia sent Mig 29M and Russians PMC with many Pantsir system, a Turkish TB 2 hangar in Misrata air base was destroyed…Egypt was ready to intervene….oil fields and hub ports for export are under LNA control and Russian PMC….But Turkish propagande and the “Pantsir parade” in Tripoli is enough to cheat GNA Sand Camels and Kebab acolytes!…

Erol

What was Turkeys goal? Saving GNA…Sirte would have been just a Bonus. Before Turkish intervention GNA was going to loose. Now they are Safe and Turkey will have Influence, will get billions of Dollars back which Libya is indebted to Turkish firms, and it will get more Trade, weapon Sales and new construction Projects.

Oil Money goes to National Bank which is under control of GNA. No matter what happens, they will get their proportion of the Oil Money. Even if Turkey would have lost Hundreds of Drones…. You know what? This would just benefit Turkish Defence Industry! GNA controlls Libyan National Bank and money (They have still 50 billion cash despite blockade) and paid for it together with Qatar.

Rhodium 10

yeah surely….but Libya GNA have no control of oil fields…they have to live of the charity of Turkey and Qatar…while LNA are exporting petrol and gas through Ras Lanuf to Sirte port beside they have 2 more export Hub Bengasi and Tobruk!…Turkey only won to take control of a Tripoli pseudocalifate like Idlib and will have to feed them!

Jon

Erdogan stopped LNA advance on Tripoli and forced a retreat until Egypt and France and Russia drew a line at Sirte. The resurgent Ottoman Empire is a long game. Part of it is exposing other Islamic leaders as in league with the west. Erdogan wants the Brotherhood to understand this reality. When he forces all that power to a stand off, and doesn’t join in the cease fire celebration, he has won.

Jihadi Colin

If Haftar had been competent, instead of pushing on straight to Tripoli he would have consolidated his gains first, and by now he would have been in a much stronger position. Still, it’s better than the slave trading human trafficking puppet GNA winning.
