The maps above provides a general look at the US-Turkish and Russian-Turkish safe zones. While the US-Turkish safe zone has never been implemented, the Russian-Turkish agreement has already started working with Russina and Syrian troops deploying along the border.

The text of the agreemend reached by Turkey and Russia (source):

President of the Republic of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and President of The Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin agreed on the following points:

1. The two sides reiterate their commitment to the preservation of the political unity and territorial integrity of Syria and the protection of national security of Turkey.

2. They emphasize their determination to combat terrorism in all forms and manifestations and to disrupt separatist agendas in the Syrian territory.

3. In this framework, the established status quo in the current Operation Peace Spring area covering Tel Abyad and Ras Al Ayn with a depth of 32 km will be preserved.

4. Both sides reaffirm the importance of the Adana Agreement. The Russian Federation will facilitate the implementation of the Adana Agreement in the current circumstances.

5. Starting 12.00 noon of October 23, 2019, Russian military police and Syrian border guards will enter the Syrian side of the Turkish-Syrian border, outside the area of Operation Peace Spring, to facilitate the removal of YPG elements and their weapons to the depth of 30 km from the Turkish-Syrian border, which should be finalized in 150 hours. At that moment, joint Russian-Turkish patrols will start in the west and the east of the area of Operation Peace Spring with a depth of 10 km, except Qamishli city.

6. All YPG elements and their weapons will be removed from Manbij and Tal Rifat.

7. Both sides will take necessary measures to prevent infiltrations of terrorist elements.

8. Joint efforts will be launched to facilitate the return of refugees in a safe and voluntary manner.

9. A joint monitoring and verification mechanism will be established to oversee and coordinate the implementation of this memorandum.

10. The two sides will continue to work to find a lasting political solution to the Syrian conflict within Astana Mechanism and will support the activity of the Constitutional Committee.

I for one trust Putin and Russia to deliver. This is the best possible outcome given the situation as it was. Of course Erdogon is as treatcherous as they come, however, Russia has a lot of military hardware that Erdogon and his Military want, eg., S-400s and SU57s so I think he will on this occasion hold up his end of the bargin. The only losers are the Kurds. Their asperations of setting up a Nation State in NE Syria have been buried. Next step Idlib then the Oil Fields.

Icarus Tanović

No, it won’t be working as Erdogan thinks. Just watch, not even single centimeter will be, stolen under pretext of some ‘safe zone’ Syria will get back it’s land.

Sencer

Is this an analyses or a heartfelt wish, a slogan ?

Ceasar Polar

Then when all is done and restored, the Golan will be the end point.

iosongasingsing

The oil fields near Deir ez Zor are manned by the detachment of the 200 American gangsters. The PKK non-communist Kurds remain protected US subjects and will still steal Syria’s oil.

Mike

They will withdrawn in due time, since how 200 soldiers can protect anything in that large an area. Its just pathetic face saving on the part of the U.S., face saving at their inevitable full withdrawal from Syria.

Jens Holm

Its not “in the large”. I see it as a temporary protection against criminals and ISIS sabotage only.

Merovingian

More importantly Idlib, LOL! Tet the goons ‘keep the oil fields’, says the zionist putin-bot trolls on this comment section. Erdogan, who mastered this move to give the Russian-Syrian alliance more Syrian soil that the gangsters from washington were stealing and occupying, is somehow to blame because these no lifes hate Turkey and Erdogan.

Jens Holm

Whicvh way do the american oil go … I see none and You are a lying not allowed to thik Yourself.

Thats whats back already. Bend over and let Assads come…

Jens Holm

Kurds are not there and PKKs are in Turkey.

Sencer

No PKK is also in Syria. It is the core of YPG.

Everyone even US DoD accepted it but you are still selling leftist / Bouckhinist propaganda here.

The leadership of YPG has intense relations / ties with Qandil mountains.

Jens Holm

And if Muhammed vant come to the maountain, the mountain will come to him.

And if there is and Ottoamn there is a Ottowomen as well as Batman is in Tyrkey.

Facts dont say Kurds come from, as You has written. DNA supports it too. They are many kinds and true some are or has moved around, but that dont say some Adam climbed down some tree in Qandil at all.

Ypu came from Mount Ararat with the Jews, so why dont You go up there and build a boat.

Sencer

Everyone know the facts, Jens You can not cover up the facts with trivia , such as above comment of yours.

iosongasingsing

Jens Holm

Toronto Tonto

HA HA Russians cant read maps dufus .

iosongasingsing

Mr. Khazar, maps are read very well by the S 400 systems and by the Russian SU 57, prompt delivery to the Turkish partner. Bye, bye, uncle Sam.

Mike

Get over your loss there you Israeli rat monkey.

Willing Conscience (The Truths

I’ll post again what Assad just said about this deal,

“President al-Assad, for his part, affirmed categorical rejection of any invasion of the Syrian lands under any title or pretext, saying that owners of the separatist targets bear the responsibility for the developments of events in the current time.

The President also stressed the return of residents to their regions to stop any previous attempts of any demographic change to which some sides tried to impose, affirming Syria’s determination to combat terrorism and occupation in any span of the Syrian territories with all legitimate means”. https://disq.us/url?url=https%3A%2F%2Fsana.sy%2Fen%2F%3Fp%3D176635%3AA_ODXsnT3j-3lOX5VmkPlgEwxvU&cuid=3606370

Pretty clear what Assad thinks about this deal.

Jens Holm

Maybee Russians will give it to Turks just as Afrin:)

Willing Conscience (The Truths

God I hope not and I don’t think they will, but I’m not game to try and predict what they will do either, I just know Assad doesn’t like it at all which is what worries/scares me.

gustavo

Exactly, Syria sees Turkey as an terrible enemy, and as an invader to its country (whatever stupid excuse used by Erdogan). Turkey is a NATO member and friend of USA (although it looks like is not). I have the feeling that this new offensive of Turkey in Syria land was planned by USA.

Willing Conscience (The Truths

I agree, I also think Trump planned to let Turkey invade but only as a last resort. I think he actually intended for the Kurds to go running back to Assad when he first announced he intended pulling out of Syria [before the Turks got a chance to invade], but due to the stubbornness of the Kurds, who desperately don’t want the US to leave and always use threats of an Isis resurgence, and demands for protection from both Turkey and Assad as an excuse to keep the US in Syria forever, the Kurds once again tried to force the US to remain by refusing to negotiate with Assad on reintergration and protection. But Trump’s finally lost patience and pulled the rug out from under the Kurds letting them fall on their own two feet, either defend yourselves or go back to Assad, that’s the only choice they got from Trump. The Kurds should’ve made a beeline to Assad’s door the minute they heard Trump say the US is leaving, but they didn’t, they held out once again hoping Trump would change his mind [due to both internal and external pressure], but Trump just ignored everyone completely and called their bluff, and now they have to work out a lopsided deal with Assad instead of doing what they should’ve in the first place, worked out a good deal with Assad before the Turks even invaded. I think the Kurdish leadership [SDC] should be put on trial for utter stupidity. Assad seems really keen on protecting the Kurds, so perhaps they’ll serve some purpose for Assad at a later date, like when he’s finally ready to confront the Turks perhaps. Cheers.
