ISIS cells still control a large part of the Homs-Deir Ezzor desert despite the recent security operation conducted by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and the National Defense Forces (NDF) in central Syria.
On February 21, the NDF media center announced that the SAA and the NDF had finished their combing operation in the central region. The operation, which started in early February, covered the areas of Homs, Rif Dimashq, Deir Ezzor and Raqqa provinces. Government forces eliminated several terrorists and sezied loads of weapons, but these were not enough to neutralize the ISIS threat.

So what was the point in the security operation then?!?!?

Simple. It was made so that ISIS could say that they still control the desert.
Don’t you know that since 2015 all the things have been going ISIS way.
See it as a garden, which You grow and has a lot in it, You dont want. You have to come again and again and a little by a little, it will be clean.
An operation dont eliminate all from ISIS. The job is to eliminate more then arrive or/avoid thime for growimg.
Its like many other things in life. Even we have a relative good police, we still have criminals outside the jails.
My worries are Assads are the same and dont eliminate the reasons for Jihadisme by reforms. They nalso dont share running the country, which in many countries make fine reaults, so most have a good life and very few becomes extremists.

As some of the NCOs I’ve met use to say: you could walk into an al-Qaeda controlled town and not even realize it.

The SDF will have the same problem, Isis didn’t just take over huge swathes of Iraq and Syria, it was welcomed in with open arms in quite a few areas, and even if all the Isis fighters are eliminated, the Isis sympathizers always remain in some areas. Rukban refugee camp near al Tanf swelled from less than 10,000 genuine refugees to more than 50,000 in just 12 months, but only AFTER the rebels and Isis started losing to the SAA, by rights it should have started dropping in refugee numbers, not swelling to over 50,000 when things were actually getting better. For me that means there’s probably close to 40,000 die hard Isis sympathizers hiding in plain sight at Rukban camp, and only 10,000 genuine refugees.
According to who? Very weird statement to make without a source.
Probably just propaganda to say that SAA not fighting ISIS. Besides, if the SAA can waltz through the desert, then I wouldn’t say they control anything. More that they are hiding out there.
The SAA hasd 150,000 soldiers positioned around Idlib waiting to rain hell on the rebels there, if Isis was still really a problem, it wouldn’t be hard to pull a few thousand soldiers off the containment lines and ship them here to help out. No ones noticed yet but Syrian airstrikes are becoming rarer than hen’s teeth lately, there must be a reason for it, and I’m not referring to Idlib, I understand why the Syrians are reluctant to bomb there, but here in Homs and Deir ez Zor, they could be helping out but aren’t mmmmm.
